Athletic Q&As

Will I have to try out or will I automatically make the team at Teach Out Institutions?

Each institution and team have individual situations related to roster sizes and player needs. NDC student-athletes should work with their current coaches and the coaches at the Teach-Out Institutions to be considered. Each student-athlete brings different skills, so coaches from both institutions will work with you individually.

Does Notre Dame College need to “release” me so I can talk with coaches at other colleges?

No, due to the NCAA Discontinued Sport Exception, all student-athletes are automatically released. This allows for student-athletes to be immediately contacted without being in the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Notre Dame College and the MEC are committed to assisting student-athletes as much as possible as they work on their future plans. As per NCAA rules, all individuals with intercollegiate eligibility remaining are now free to pursue opportunities at other institutions; no permission to contact or transfer releases will be required. The College’s athletic administration will assist student athletes who wish to have their contact information available in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Those students who signed National Letters of Intent will no longer be bound by those agreements and are free to speak to any other institution.

Also, all National Letters of Intent (NLI) will be null and void so signees are automatically released and can be contacted without penalty.

What makes a student eligible to play at another institution?

Student athletes, including those who are multiple time transfers, may be immediately eligible at another NCAA school if they meet the following requirements:

  • Students must leave Notre Dame College in good academic standing, meaning students who are not on academic probation or suspension.
  • Students must successfully complete nine transferable credit hours during the Spring 2024 semester.

Although most students are able to qualify for a transfer exception, please ensure that you are discussing your eligibility with your Athletic Compliance Officer or Athletic Director at your new institution as every conference including NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, etc. have their own eligibility requirements. Your NDC coaches can help you navigate the NCAA rules and transfer information. If you have any questions regarding your current eligibility status please contact the NDC Athletic Compliance Office at eschwab@ndc.edu.

Are student-athletes invited to join sports teams at Teach-Out Institutions?

Each Teach-Out institution hosts its own set up specific teams. Each institution maintains a specific NCAA Division and is part of a specific conference. Because the focus of the “Teach-Out” is academic, athletes are encouraged to have a conversation with the Teach-Out institution of their choice regarding the potential for joining a team.

Will NDC have Spring 2024 varsity sports as planned?

Yes, Spring 2024 varsity sports will continue as planned at NDC.
