Notre Dame College honors its founders, the Sisters of Notre Dame, with its Legacy Week 2022, dedicated to keeping their century of charism alive on campus.

Legacy Week 2022 programs from September 24 through October 1 at the College this year build on the Notre Dame’s centennial celebration, which continues through September 2023. A video tribute to the 100-year living history of the Sisters of Notre Dame at the College is available online at https://youtu.be/5NU0aiRI1fU.

The week also recognizes the Sisters of Notre Dame Foundation Day, October 1, 1850, when Hilligonde Wolbring and Elisabeth Kühling took their first vows to become religious sisters in Coesfeld, Germany. The women welcomed orphaned and neglected children into their home with the mission to teach them and in so doing initiated the religious order.

Special Legacy Week events this year include a Centennial Day of Service on Saturday, September 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. across Northeast Ohio; the Sisters of Notre Dame annual BBQ & Boutique on Sunday, September 25, from noon to 5 p.m. at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in Chardon, Ohio; and Sunday Night Church at 8 p.m. in Regina Chapel on campus.

The Division of Professional Education also will have an induction ceremony for its scholars, Sunday, September 25, at 2 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel.

Legacy Week also features several benedictions. Office Blessings with Fr. John Blazek are offered on Tuesday, September 27, from 1-3 p.m. and on Wednesday, September 28, from 2:30-4 p.m., all throughout campus. A campus-wide Blessing Service will be on Thursday, September 29, at 4:30 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel.

To help keep the Sisters’ spirit thriving, Legacy Week includes Homecoming and Alumni Reunion festivities and several athletic events on campus as well.

The week celebrates Notre Dame’s history, its values and mission and honors those not just Wolbring and Kühling but also those individuals who followed and had the courage to come to America and establish an all-women’s College during challenging times. Notre Dame was founded in 1922, and the Sisters kept the institution flourishing during the Great Depression, World War II, Vatican II and more.

It offers the community the opportunities to learn about the ministries of the Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States and provides Notre Dame faculty, staff and students occasions to recommit themselves to carrying on the mission of the College.
