Notre Dame College is conducting a welcome event specifically for its 2019 nursing students, featuring an address by the president of the Cleveland Council of Black Nurses.

The Notre Dame Nursing program presents its First Annual Fall Student Red Carpet “Nursing Celebrates … You” program for pre-nursing students, nursing students and nursing faculty on Wednesday, September 18, from 4-6 p.m. at the Division of Nursing on the third floor of Regina Hall.  Stephanie Doibo, president of the Cleveland Council of Black Nurses (CCBN), will address the assembly at 5 p.m.

This is the first welcome event presented by the College’s nursing program under the new leadership of David M. Foley, Ph.D., M.S.N., R.N.-B.C., C.N.E., M.P.A., chair and associate professor of nursing. The celebration of the start of the 2019-2020 academic year for nursing majors at Notre Dame, which includes dinner with door prizes raffled throughout the event, offers a unique opportunity for pre-nursing and nursing students at the College to network with nursing alumni as well as to make connections with each other and the Notre Dame faculty and staff.

According to Foley, the primary purpose of the event is to create a “community of Nursing at NDC” by bringing pre-nursing, pre-licensure nursing, alumni and faculty together within the context of a social event that represents a “level playing field.” The secondary purpose is to promote the success of all students by helping hem select a mentor, which the nursing literature shows is key, he said.

About Notre Dame Nursing

Notre Dame’s nursing division traditionally commemorates its family tradition of educating students in the nursing profession through celebrations midway through the nursing program with a special lamp lighting ceremony for junior nursing students, and at the conclusion of the nursing degree via a traditional pinning ceremony for graduating senior nurses.

The College offers three degree programs covering the continuum of nursing education and professions: a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a post-licensure RN to BSN, and a Master of Science in Nursing Education. Notre Dame nursing facilities include the Shaughnessy Center for Nursing Innovation, a state-of-the-art interactive nursing classroom in Regina Hall of the South Euclid campus and placements in world-class clinical sites such as the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals of Cleveland, MetroHealth Medical Center and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.

About Stephanie Doibo

In addition to her role leading the CCBN, which promotes health education and wellness in the face of existing community health disparities, Doibo has worked as a registered surgical nurse at University Hospitals of Cleveland for seven years. She recently completed a master’s degree in public health from Walden University.

Doibo and the CCBN are committed to the recruitment and retention of African-American students in nursing programs, to the career mobility of these nurses and to the health of black consumers. The organization accomplishes this by educating and mentoring registered nurses, licensed vocational/practical nurses, nursing students and retired nurses; facilitating the professional development and career advancement of nurses in emerging health care systems; and building consumer knowledge and understanding of healthcare issues.
