Notre Dame College has advanced Scott Swain, formerly its director of athletics, to vice president of intercollegiate athletics.

Swain, who joined the College in July 2012, oversees Notre Dame’s 19 athletic teams, about 35 coaches and more than 650 student-athletes.

“Scott has been a part of the senior leadership group at Notre Dame College for many years where he brings good counsel along with his fellow vice presidents and deans,” said J. Michael Pressimone, Ed.D., president of the College. “This change is reflective of the ever more complex nature of the work of intercollegiate athletics and is becoming the industry standard. I thank Scott for his service to Notre Dame.”

Under Swain’s leadership, the College has won numerous Mountain East Conference (MEC) championships across fall, winter and spring sports and has four national championships in wrestling and rugby. Notre Dame’s sports teams have finished second in the MEC Commissioner’s Cup standings for overall performance for the past three years. Also during Swain’s tenure there have been 60 All Americans and 24 Academic All Americans by Falcon student-athletes.

The College continually places 50 or more student-athletes on MEC lists of academic honorees, which recognize those with grade-point averages from 3.25 to 4.00.

Over the past 10 years, Notre Dame twice has been named a finalist for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for sports teams’ community service and engagement activities.

Swain was named to the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association Board of Directors for the 2019-2020 membership year. The association is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He has been the MEC’s first representative to the NCAA Division II Management Council and has served two terms as the MEC’s chair of the Committee of Athletics Administrators.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Swain came to Notre Dame from the University of Tennessee, where he served as an assistant director in the athletic department from 2006-2012. His experience managing academic support and compliance programs includes positions at the University of Northern Colorado (2005-06), the University of Colorado (2003-05) and Xavier University (1998-2003). At Xavier, Swain served as head cross country and track & field coach after starting his career in collegiate athletics as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Miami University (1995-98).

Swain earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a Master of Science in sport studies from Miami University.
