Notre Dame College is teaming up with a professional road running series to present a formal 5K in commemoration of its 100th year.

The Falcon Centennial 5k Race/1 Mile Walk will take place Sunday, April 30, with a 9 a.m. start near the entrance to the College campus at 1857 S. Green Road. The event is open to the public, and each registered entrant receives a tribute t-shirt and an exclusive Falcon Centennial Finisher medal. Registration is available online now. Packet pickup information is forthcoming.

Participants will race along picturesque city side streets or walk the scenic one-mile mostly campus route. Family, friends, children and grandchildren, along with students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited, as are members of the local and extended communities for the event and a campus post-race get-together.

Runners and walkers receive a complimentary Mr. Chicken sandwich or tenders and a beer for those of age following the road race. The Notre Dame Falcons’ Nest student union; patio outside; and grassy, shaded campus will be open for entrants, spectators and neighbors to relax and unwind.

Engaging Experience

Notre Dame students in the sports management courses taught by John Przybys, Ed.D., assistant professor in the Division of Business Administration at the College, will be involved in organizing, overseeing and promoting the event as part of the experiential learning intertwined in Notre Dame curricula.

Students will coordinate with race managers to reach a goal for entrants. They likely will concept a plan for distributing marketing materials throughout Northeast Ohio, conduct registration drives on campus and in other localities and coordinate packet pickup for participants. The class also will be busy on race day with course supervision, water stops and start-finish operations. They also will administer the post-race party.

Race Routes

The Centennial 5K route will wind through South Euclid neighborhoods north of campus from Golfway to Mayfield roads and along Oakmount Road away from and then back toward campus. The 1-mile walk begins at the same start-finish line, continues to Golfway and through the neighborhood back toward campus. Both routes end along Notre Dame’s residence halls and College Road back to the start-finish line on Green.

The Falcon 5K/1 Mile Walk is part of the 2023 Greater Cleveland XC, or GCXC, Running Series. GCXC stages road races in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and surrounding areas. The company specializes in athletic events and manages the chip-timing and scoring.
