This article is from 2021. The Summer Treatment Program is no longer on campus as of 2023.

Notre Dame College once again is uniting with the Cleveland Clinic to provide a world-renowned summer camp for youth with a documented learning difference

The College continues its partnership with the Cleveland Clinic in 2021 as the host of the Clinic’s award-winning Summer Treatment Program for children and adolescents aged 6-11 diagnosed with ADHD. Notre Dame is one of only 10 such camps in the U.S.

The seven-week camp is part of the ADHD Center for Evaluation and Treatment of Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and runs through August 6 on the College campus.

The Summer Treatment Program is led by Michael J. Manos, Ph.D., the head of the Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic. This marks the camp’s 20th year.

The Clinic has increased staffing and reduced camper numbers this summer to meet Covid-19 requirements. The program will be utilizing our outdoor spaces as much as possible this summer.

The partnership with Cleveland Clinic extends to the Notre Dame Thrive Learning Center, formerly the College’s Academic Support Center for Students with Learning Differences. The Clinic helps first-year students at the College successfully transition to college life academically, socially and emotionally.

The Clinic’s Summer Treatment Program for youth from across the country that takes place at the College each year provides participants and their families with individually designed treatment plans that address the children’s behavioral, emotional and learning difficulties.

During the summer camp at Notre Dame, youth with ADHD strengthen social skills and awareness, learning skills and academic performance. The participants spend time in a classroom setting, in age-specific recreational activities such as athletics. The children also participate in group problem-solving discussions and teamwork exercises.

Counselors working with the Summer Treatment Program have been trained to work with the campers. If visitors see any situations that make them apprehensive, they need to allow the camp counselors to handle the circumstances.  People on campus are always to verify that the person with the child is a counselor, but then allow them to do their job.

The Cleveland Clinic Summer Treatment Program is the only program selected for the national Multimodal Treatment of ADHD (MTA) funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Office of Education. More than 2,500 children and their parents have taken advantage of the camp.
