IRB requirements for student research
All students, both undergraduate and graduate, who will be conducting research projects involving human subjects, will need to submit a proposal to the IRB for review using a standardized template available through the IRB.
Some confusion in the educational arena is the statement that any research that involves using normal educational practices within an educational setting is exempt. In reality, any project using minors (under age 18) requires IRB approval and both parental consent and assent even if it falls under the “normal educational practices”. Also, even exempt projects have to be reviewed by an IRB and approved by the IRB as being exempt.
