The Honor Band Experience

The Music Department of Notre Dame College extends a special opportunity for advanced learning and performance opportunity for high school students – grades 9 through 12. Selected students attend a masterclass with college-level faculty and rehearse ensemble conducted by Professor Krueger and a special guest conductor..

The experience culminates in a joint concert with the Notre Dame Wind Symphony.

Notre Dame Honor Band Conductor

The festival and concert, under the direction of Michael Krueger, M.M., co-director of performing arts, assistant professor of music, and director of instrumental studies at Notre Dame. Krueger directs the College Wind Symphony and Falcon Marching Band and teaches applied composition lessons and academic courses in music theory. He is a member of the drum major and student leadership staff for Fred J. Miller Inc., a national company supporting clinics, scholarships and pageantry for color guard, dance team, drum major and band leaders.

A nationally recognized composer, Krueger’s most popular piece, “For Patrick,” has been featured on The Composers Circle and Musicuratum. The composition also has been featured at several honor band concerts and professional symposia, including the 2014 College Band Directors National Association Southwest Conference. His composition, “Alone,” premiered at the International Trombone Festival in 2017. 

Krueger has served as a composer-in-residence and composer clinician at several high schools, universities and conferences across the U.S and has received commissions from dozens of ensembles and soloists throughout the nation. Prior to joining Notre Dame, Krueger served as the brass director for Fort Zumwalt South High School in Missouri and as the graduate assistant for the wind ensemble at Butler.

2021 Honor Band Festival & Concert

February 25-26, 2022


To be considered for the Notre Dame Honor Band (Feb 25-26) , Ohio high school students must first be nominated by their school music directors. Use the form below to nominate your most deserving students for this honor. Once students are nominated and selected, it is expected that they will attend the festival. Please check your students’ availability prior to submitting their nomination.

The deadline for student nominations is February 4th, 2022.

Auditions for placement are conducted on the first day of the festival. Students will be asked to audition on their full range chromatic scale, two major scales (selected from C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db concert), and a selected etude.

All audition materials will be made available on our website 3 – 4 weeks prior to the Honor Band Festival. All Honor Band participants must be available for rehearsals and performance during the Honor Band Festival.

  • Cost: $60 per student (includes music, meals, t-shirt, and clinician fees)
  • Housing: Housing is not provided

Day 1 – February 25
Example schedule below:

  • 2:30 pm: Registration and Placement Auditions
  • 5 pm: Dinner
  • 6 pm to 8:30 pm: Opening rehearsal

    Day 2 – February 26
    Example schedule below:

    • 10 am: Rehearsal #2
    • Noon: Lunch
    • 1 p.m: Masterclasses with NDC faculty
    • 1 p.m: Directors session with Michael Krueger
    • 2:15 p.m: Rehearsal #3
    • 4:45 p.m: Dinner (on your own)
    • 6:30 p.m: Call time for high school students
    • 7:30 p.m: NDC Wind Symphony and NDC Honor Band Concert
