Falcon Golf Event an 'Eagle' on the Scorecard

On July 13, 2007, the 17-sport Notre Dame Athletic Department focused on just one game – golf. It was a day for Notre Dame College to rally around the Blue & Gold as 29 teams competed in the Sixth Annual Falcon Golf Classic at the Grantwood Golf Course in Solon.

“The day was a great success,” said Sue Hlavacek, NDC’s Director of Athletics. “The weather was perfect, and from the comments of many of the golfers, everyone had a wonderful time.”

The outing raises funds that benefit the teams and student-athletes of the College’s 17 varsity programs, including Women’s Swimming & Diving and Wrestling – the two newest Falcon teams that celebrated inaugural seasons in 2006-07.

Supporters of NDC Athletics competed for prizes in team and individual categories and then capped the day off with a luncheon buffet and raffle. The winning team in the four-player scramble event was comprised of Elvis Grbac, Steve Haic, Thomas Iammarino, and Chris Skripac.

The annual event, first played in 2002, is a tangible way to link program supporters to the beneficiaries of their generosity. “Many of our student-athletes and their coaches volunteered at the event or played,” noted Hlavacek, the head of NDC Athletics since 1996. “This provided the opportunity for supporters of the event to meet the beneficiaries of the proceeds from the outing.”

Hlavacek and several Notre Dame coaches expressed gratitude for the outing’s support, achieved through donations, volunteers, and sponsorships.

The date for year’s tournament has been set for July 18, 2008. Watch for further details later this spring.
