Alexis PiñeroAlexis Piñero returns to Notre Dame College for his annual guest artist recital. This semester, he is presenting a vocal music recital on “Music from Scriptures, Sacred Text, and Prayers of the people.” Alexis will be accompanied by NDC’s Dr. Irwin Shung on the piano. In addition, Mr. Piñero will be guest lecturing a theology course with Sr. Karita Ivancic, “Arts Approach to the Bible”. During this class, he will be performing excerpts from Mendelssohn’s Elijah and speaking on his approach to the text and music. Program notes, forward and co-lecture provided by Dr. Chris McMillan, Associate Professor of Dance, Gender Studies, and Theology at The University of Iowa.  


Mr. Piñero’s residency is presented by the NDC Mission Office, Joan Cronin Reagan #NDCPerforms Series, and the generous gift of Jeanette Vandemotter.

Excerpts from Mendelssohn's Elijah;  lecture on the approach to the music and text. 


New York City native, Tenor Alexis Piñero, is carving out a pathway for his singing in opera, concert and recital. By invitation, Mr. Piñero toured Robbiate, Italy during summer 2017 as the tenor soloist for Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Bassi Burggnatelli Singer and Conductor Symposium.

Active in New England, Mr. Pinero debuted with the East Coast Chamber Opera as Oronte in Handel’s Alcina and with the Cambridge Ensemble as First Priest/Armoured Man in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte this year. Past performances include Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, The Four Servants in Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffman and Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte with Connecticut Lyric Opera.

Previous engagements with Miami Lyric Opera, Loudon Lyric Opera, and Belcantanti Opera in roles as Jacquino in Beethoven’s Fidelio, The Sailor in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Prunier in Puccini’s La Rondine, Don Basilio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Alfred in J. Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. In oratorio Mr. Piñero has been tenor soloist for Bach’s Cantata BWV 111, B minor mass and Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Mass in C minor, Coronation Mass and Requiem, Saint- Säens Christmas Oratorio, Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater. Irwin ShungDr. Irwin Shung is the Collaborative Pianist-In-Residence at NDC. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music Degrees in Piano from Cleveland Institute of Music. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano from The Peabody Institute and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Shung will be accompanying Mr. Pinero on piano. FULL BIO


Chris McMillanDr. Chris McMillan is an Associate Professor of Dance, Gender Studies, and Theology at The University of Iowa. He hold a PhD Degree in Theology from Kings College-London, a MFA Degree in Experimental Choreography from Laban Conservatoire-London, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance, Social Justice Education, and Theology from Hampshire College. Dr. McMillan wrote the program notes and forward for the recital, and will be co-lecturing the "Arts Approach to The Bible" class. FULL BIO

Dr. McMillan will present a Hip-Hop Contemporary Dance Fusion Workshop on Sunday, October 8 for all students, faculty, and staff from 6-8p in the Regina Gym.
