"When
you look at Mary's work, you know that she permitted herself to
go inside the pain of the suffering, to know a mother's grief, a
child's terror, a community's grief. You know that she went to those
dark places in order to tell us, to teach us, to bring us with her
into the depths of that reality. But perhaps, without her realizing
it, she also provided herslf as our guide, a guide of compassion
and love, who represents those images with tenderness and respect
and humanity. She tells us with her art what she told us with her
person."
