Donor Rights & Privileges

1. Donors will be recognized and honored for their support and included in the appropriate recognition societies.

2. Donors will be advised of the impact of their gifts on NDC’s projects and programs.

3. Donors will have the option of having all deferred gift agreements reviewed by their own legal and financial advisors.

4. Donors will be advised that obtaining a qualified appraisal to establish the fair market value of gifted assets will be the responsibility of the donor, not of Notre Dame College.

5. All gift arrangements will be kept confidential and request for anonymity carefully guarded, unless federal and state law or other legal authority requires disclosure. 

6. Before gift commitments are publicized, permission will be sought from the donor.

7. Notre Dame College will seek to make the giving experience satisfying to the donor through a variety of appropriate and recognition techniques. 

Donor Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights.

  • To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  • To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  • To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  • To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  • To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
  • To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  • To respect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  • To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  • To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  • To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

The text of this statement in its entirety was developed by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel (AAFRC), Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). 

Ethics in Fundraising

1. Notre Dame College is dedicated to the highest standards of ethical conduct in fund-raising. Staff members, college representatives, and volunteers advocate these standards by incorporating them into all fund-raising activities and by serving as a model for professionalism to others. Notre Dame supports and encourages its staff members in these efforts by providing appropriate opportunities for training, education, and leadership. Staff members, through training and orientation, are expected to be familiar with professional standards of ethics, including the Donor Bill of Rights.

2. The fund-raising program of the College encompasses all gifts solicitations on behalf of all departments and programs. 

3. The fund-raising program generally supports and encourages both unrestricted gifts to the College and designated gifts to programs and units of the donor’s choice.

4. All fund-raising projects or campaigns must be pre-approved by the Vice President of College Development (this includes but is not limited to fundraising by students, the library, athletics, etc.). All construction or renovation projects require approval of the President before solicitation begins.

5. All grant proposals greater than $10,000 must be approved by the Vice President of College Development.

6. The College Development Office maintains a tracking system which records and manages the solicitation of prospects in order to avoid multiple solicitations that could confuse the prospect or diminish the effectiveness of the solicitation. Before approaching prospects, they must be reviewed and approved by the Vice President of College Development.
