Information and Questions

In the past we have held information sessions to introduce the immersions to interested students. We have never found a time to hold these meetings that was convenient for everyone. As a result, if you are new to immersions and considering traveling with us, feel free to contact us and we will meet with you to answer any questions you might have. Contact either Ted Steiner or Anita Yoder. An immersion FAQ (frequently asked questions) page is also available.

Application

All participants are asked to complete an online application. Before filling out the application, it is important to read about the Immersion Experience and to think through why you want to participate.

The application asks for contact information, previous immersion experience, health information, and financial needs. All participants are required to write a short essay (under 500 words) about the prompt below. Please write this in a Word document and copy and paste your answer into the online application. This will avoid the problem of losing your work if there is a computer or internet issue.

The Notre Dame Immersion Program is based on the following four values: Servant Leadership, Learning, Community, and Spirituality. Please choose two of these values and describe how you hope to grow personally or professionally in those areas through the Immersion Experience. In addition to describing what you hope to gain through the experience, also describe what you hope to give to others.

Selection Process

It is possible that there will be more applicants than we can accommodate on the trip. In general, preference will be given to those who have not had previous immersion opportunities or those who can serve in leadership positions. Students will be selected based on the quality of the online application and demonstrated desire to engage in the service and learning that the Immersion Experience offers. It is also preferred that students do not participate in an immersion in the same year they are graduating.

Commitment Form

After applicants have been selected to participate in an immersion, they are asked to fill out a commitment form. This commitment form lists the expectations of all participants and includes payment information, conduct guidelines (including an agreement about refraining from alcohol consumption during an immersion), and information about the preparation process.

This form and a non-refundable deposit are due to the Campus Ministry office by the date indicated above. It is necessary to have your materials turned in by this date so that we can make flight arrangements and begin the planning process.

First Gathering & Fundraising Meeting

After participants have handed in their commitment forms and deposits, an initial meeting will be held to meet one another and discuss fundraising options. Even if participants do not need to fundraise to pay for the immersion, this will be the first opportunity to meet the group, and attendance is expected.
