The Center for Professional Development at Notre Dame College provides ongoing professional development for MR/DD, early intervention, and special education teachers, social workers, counselors, and human services personnel. Flexibly scheduled courses cover a broad range of topics necessary for registration, certification or licensure as well as professional development.
Notre Dame College is an approved provider of Social Worker Continuing Professional Education (CPE) (RSX040201) by the State of Ohio Social Worker and Counseling Board.
Notre Dame College is an approved provider of Counselor Continuing Professional Education (CPE) (RCX040202) by the State of Ohio Social Worker and Counseling Board.

what it means to be a team. This course will explore how your
organization works, what benefits a team approach would make
and why top-down approaches cannot always work. The course
explores team membership and behavior. Facilitating a team
meeting is a skill that can be developed. It is essential for today’s
professionals to have the know-how to run a successful and
productive meeting on behalf of their clients whether they are
children’s parents and teachers in an IEP, adults planning to
strategically develop new methods of management, or problemsolvers
looking for solutions to sticky situations.

development and why the information may influence the
child’s development after birth. Learn why early recognition
of atypical development may make a difference with future
development.
This offering covers when an infant really begins to learn
about his/her environment. At what age should parents begin
to provide educational experiences to their children? Is it
appropriate to call age two “terrible?” Finally, how does a
preschooler learn? Is there such a thing as “too much
structure?” Does a public school district have any educational
obligations to a preschooler?

This offering is a study of fundamental principles of behavior
management (behavior support). Topics include prevention,
positive programming for durable results, and the limitations
of the non-aversive model. Practical experiences and case
examples promote increased skills in defining behaviors,
behavioral assessments, and designing and evaluating
intervention strategies. A variety of intervention strategies
are reviewed. Essential information provided allows
participants to immediately implement strategies across a
variety of school, mental health, and human services settings.

This offering is designed to provide students with knowledge
about atypical development and disabilities from birth to age
three. Factors affecting infants’ and toddlers’ physical, social,
emotional, cognitive, language and aesthetic development are
covered using observation, case study, and exposure to research
and dominant theories of child development. Assessment of
young children and how they differ in development and
approaches to supporting individual development are covered.
Assessment of conditions that affect young children’s
development including risk factors, patterns of specific disabilities,
and significance of socio-cultural and political context are
addressed.

This blended course is designed to give students an overview
of the issues associated with working with families of disabled
children and adults. It will provide students with specific
strategies to more effectively develop family/professional-working
partnerships. The course will provide you with an
understanding of parental educational rights and
responsibilities, legislative issues and methods for professionals
and parents/guardians to communicate in person, in writing,
by telephone and through technology.
This offering also provides an understanding of the dynamics
of family relationships between siblings with and without
disabilities as well as immediate and extended family members.
Stages of acceptance, coping strategies and expectations for
the future are covered.

Understanding the AD/HD Child In the Classroom

Participants will become familiar with the myths of AD/HD
and be able to distinguish true neurological AD and typical
misbehaviors. The offering will provide simulated experiences
of what AD/HD feels like to the child in the classroom. Learn
the legal protections of the AD/HD child and become aware
of the wide range of adaptations and techniques for helping
students with homework frustrations. Print and video resources
