Exploring the Content of English/Language Arts

This activity-based course is designed for the teacher who needs to fulfill the highly qualified teacher requirement in English/Language Arts content, Grades 7-12.  Primary emphasis of this course is on the fundamentals of Language Arts content with a special focus on conventions, writing, and literary text.  Through readings, individual investigations, group activities, presentations, and applications assignments, participants will investigate what teachers need to know and understand to enable students to meet the Ohio Academic Content Standards in English and Language Arts.

Adapting Math Lessons to Meet Ohio Standards ~ HQT Math

This course will be offered in a blended format, that combination of on campus class meetings, computer research outside of class, and project assigned teaching within school. The course is designed to better acquaint teacher, especially intervention specialist wanting to come highly qualified in math, with the mathematical content of Ohio Academic Content Standards. The primary focus of the course is mathematics content at secondary level; however, there will be some concepts directed toward implementation in the classroom. offering provides activities through which the participants will have the opportunity to investigate some fundamental mathematical content (number, number sense, operations, patterns, functions, as well as algebra, geometry, and spatial sense). Implementing the mathematics content of the Ohio Academic Content Standards in lesson plans is an essential part of this course and participant evaluation. Using readings, discussions, presentations, individual investigations through computer research, and assignments applying information are all a part of this course.

Participants should bring the following materials needed for class:

  • Current secondary math textbook (teacher edition) resources being used.

  • Ohio Academic Content Standards for K- Mathematics.

  • Graphing calculator (TI-83 plus or TI-84 plus, silver edition, Texas Instruments) Check with your Math Department if you need to borrow a calculator.

* This course is offered in a blended format which requires in-class attendance, outside project, and development teaching of a unit lesson in your school.

Science is FUNdamental: Strategies and Content for HQT Science

This is a highly interactive, hands-on experience, integrating the Ohio Science Standards for grades 7-12. Participants will be actively engaged in learning activities, extended applications, and knowledge of content to support student learning and understand how to support the science standards: Earth & Space Science, Life Science, Physical Science, Science & Technology. This course meets the fortyfive hour HQT requirement including the ten hours of job embedded guided practice. Participants will work to achieve best practice strategies, integrate multimedia and current technologies, build effective lesson plans and appropriate assignments, engage in ongoing sharing and experience FUN that can be brought into science teaching and learning process.

Teaching Civics/Government Using Standards Based Approach

This offering has an in-depth focus on the study of U>S> Government and economy.  The course incorporates all seven state content standards with emphasis on the historic roots of the political system and how our political system has changed over time. Participants will develop standards based lessons that respond to the learning style of their students. Participants are expected to maintain a notebook and create a board game as part of course.

Teaching Social Studies Utilizing Technology

Full integration and application of technology to teach social studies will be shown to enhance, extend, and accelerate student learning. Participants will have the opportunities to learn, use, and apply technology while incorporating the state standards for social studies. Participants will develop a lesson and examine historical events to explain current issues. The effective use of resources to complement textbooks and professional journals will be a part of this interactive offering. Smart board technology, video conferencing, internet resources are all a part of the methods offerings. This program is open to any educator, elementary through secondary, who teaches social studies and is eager to learn how to utilize today’s technology.

This course is designed to develop literacy skills using reading and compre­hension strategies that will help students acquire, retain and recall important information. Emphasis will be placed on the development and utilization of a broad spectrum of pedagogical methodologies designed to foster reading literacy.  Teaching methods such as visualizing/verbalizing program, the Wilson Reading program, fix up strategies in reading, vocabulary development and understanding literary and informational text will be addressed.
