The Clara Fritzsche Library Presents:
Alla Prima:
Classic Paintings
by
Charles J. Pinkney

The Clara Fritzsche Library will host “Alla Prima: Classic Paintings,” an exhibit of landscapes, still lifes and portraiture by Charles J. Pinkney. Alla prima, also known as direct painting, is a style of painting where, instead of building colors up with layers, the painting is done in one session while the paint is still wet. The term comes from the Italian phrase meaning “at the first” or “all at once.” The works are oils on linen and the bright colors and lush greenery present in the paintings are, in the words of the artist, “a reflection of how welcome spring is this year.”
Dates: June 7 through August 3, 2007
Library Hours: Monday-Tuesday 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Sunday CLOSED; (CLOSED July 4th)

Spring 2007 in the Falcon Café:
“Explore the Wood”
Woodcut prints from Lisa Schonberg’s
AR 325 Introduction to Printmaking Class
Bethany Elkins
Allie Sheets
Rachel Schneider
Mary Meeks
Heather VonSpeegle
Erin Henry
In this course students gain experience with traditional and unconventional fine art printmaking techniques such as wood cuts, monographs and intaglio prints. The goal of the project was to alter the surface of a wood block by experimenting with unconventional tools and methods of mark making while also creating a unique abstract design. Students used such items as sandpaper, wire brushes, compass points as well as hammering in various items such as nails, wire, paper clips, etc. Some used the traditional knife and gouge but in a limited manner. When the block was complete, ink was rolled over the block, then paper was placed on top of the block and the print was made by rubbing the back of the paper.

The Clara Fritzsche Library Presents:
Northcoast Impressions:
works created in the “open air” around Cleveland by Plein Air Painters, Cleveland
July 7th through August 31st, 2005
Opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 7th from 7 to 9 p.m. |
|
Through the months of May and June this group of artists visited the scenic Notre Dame campus to capture images of the grounds and buildings on canvas. These works plus other scenes of the Greater Cleveland area will be included in the exhibit, which will be part of South Euclid Fun Day, an opportunity for people to explore various institutions in the City of South Euclid scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 30th.
Plein Air Painters, Cleveland was formed in 2003 by Alix Hallman Travis to celebrate painting on site from life with others who share that challenge and enthusiasm. Rapid brush strokes are characteristic of the method and watercolor is often the medium of choice for this reason, although oils are also used. The French Impressionists often worked outdoors and there are similarities in subject matter and technique.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 7th from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free and refreshments will be served. Call for summer hours. For more information, contact Karen Zoller at 216-373-5267.

From the Ancient Center
Mandala Drawings and
Metal Sculptures
by Christine Siarka
April 7th through May 27th 2005 |
|
Opening reception: Thursday, April 7, 7-9 pm. Music by Still Inertia with Mike Williams and Amanda North. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome!
Gallery talk: 7:30 pm. The artist will lead visitors through a walking meditation while completing a sculpture installation by adding rings of river stones or metal discs.
Siarka’s current work with mandalas in drawings and metal sculpture was inspired by a desire to combine her practice of meditation with the line and shape found through walks in Ohio ’s natural spaces. The three-dimensional mandalas consist of stone in the form of found objects and metal. The metals are manipulated in color through combinations of patinas. The form and texture of the metal is altered to balance the rock’s natural shape, surface and color.
