The formation of the Eastern Church Resource Center is the culmination of a pioneering effort here at Notre Dame College beginning with the shared vision of Fran Babic, former Director of the Lifelong Learning Center at NDC, and Eleanor Malburg, Administrative Assistant in the College's Pastoral Theology Office. Through her graduate work and independent study in Soviet and Eastern European history and culture, Fran was introduced to the priests of many local churches who willingly shared their libraries and gave of their time for research and information sharing. The need to provide a forum for creating an open dialogue in the hopes of fostering appreciation and understanding among the churches was seen. The two departments cosponsored a workshop with the hope that the traditions of Roman Catholic and Eastern Churches would be interesting for students and the surrounding community. From the success of that first seminar, the Eastern Church Planning Committee was formed at the request of participating clergy, and the seminar became an annual dialogue between the clergy and bishops of the Orthodox, Byzantine and Roman Catholic churches in the Greater Cleveland area.
Interest in the topic of church unity is growing and ways to educate and involve lay people in the process are being discussed throughout the United States. Notre Dame College's annual Eastern Church Traditions and Celebrations Seminar is now being used as a prototype for a similar effort at the Catholic University of America. The Eastern Church Resource Center represents the next step in fostering understanding between the groups. The Center houses a collection of books, videos, journals, curriculum guides and audiotapes pertaining to Eastern Church studies and ecumenism, all made possible by the generosity of participating clergy and Planning Committee members. All are welcome to use the resources of the Center within the library. A pleasant and tranquil environment is provided for research, reflection and quiet study. A videocassette player and monitor are available for viewing the collection of videotapes. Copy machines and tape recorders are also available. Some materials may be checked out. Please see a librarian to become a guest patron of the library.
The Center is open during library hours (9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday during semesters.) Hours may change during some holidays and breaks. Librarians are also available to answer reference questions. Donations of relevant materials, such as books and icons are always welcome.

IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION of Notre Dame College’s Eastern Church Resource Center, the Clara Fritzsche Library Gallery will host
“The Art, History and Theology of Romanian Icons on Glass,” a display of icons from Transylvania.
The exhibit is made possible through the cooperation of the Rev. Fr. Remus Grama, D. Min., Parish Priest of St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, Mr. George Dobrea and the Romanian Ethnic Art Museum (REAM).
An opening reception will take place on

"Monasticism: The Quest for God"
The seminar opens Friday, October 10, 2003, at 7:15 pm in Notre Dame College's Christ the King Chapel with "The Mosaic of Monasticism: The Spirit's Creativity for the Church," presented by Msgr. George Appleyard, Vicar for Religious, Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma. A reception with refreshments will follow. The Saturday program will be held 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Abbey, 10510 Buckeye Road, Cleveland, with talks on "Mind, Heart and Hand: Moderation and Integration as Keys to Holiness" by Fr. Michael Brunovsky, OSB, Monk of St. Andrew Abbey in Cleveland; "Anapat: Exploring the Highlights of Armenian Monasticism" by Fr. Vahan Hovhanessian from St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, New Rochelle, New York; "Witnessing to the Eternal: Reflections from a Modern Orthodox Monastic Perspective" by Brother Christopher, Monk of New Skete, Cambridge, New York. The seminar is open to all clergy, religious and laity with the hope that knowledge will lead to greater understanding and mutual respect among Christians.
