The Greenest Day of the Year

“I need three bread and two slaw!”

“Hi! Did you find everything alright today?”

“Can someone run and check for five CB and cabbage?!”

That’s right; it is my favorite time of the year: St. Patrick’s Day. And in Cleveland, it’s go big or go home. So here are some of my favorite things about the greenest day of the year.

  1. Working a Double. Ever since I began my job at Manhattan Deli in Willoughby Hills back in February 2009, I have worked a double on St. Patrick’s Day. It is mandatory for everyone to work, no exceptions. Picture this: 12 hours of non-stop corned beef and cabbage served by the wackiest people you will ever meet dressed in the craziest green outfits known to man. It’s an awesome experience, to say the least.
  2. Corned Beef. The Irish in me comes out in my love for corned beef, and the deli is famous for the stuff, selling more than 3,000 pounds of it on the 17th. I’m in heaven on St. Patty’s. Whether it’s a simple sandwich on rye, a Rueben, or a full dinner with cabbage, carrots and potatoes, be sure to get your fill to bring lots of good luck!
  3. The Irish Spirit. It doesn’t matter if you’re Irish, German, English or Antarctic, on St. Patty’s Day everyone is in a green-beer-fueled great mood. Comparable to Christmas, the general atmosphere is merry and bright (green, that is), and everyone wishes you good luck. How can such an optimistic day be anything other than amazing?

So, as an old Irish prayer goes: “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back.” And may next March 17 find you in great spirits with lots of corned beef in your stomach!
