Message From the Chief
October 22, 2008
Holiday Safety
As we approach the end of the semester, many of us will participate in holiday activities like parties and shopping. Observing a few common-sense practices will ensure your holidays are happy ones:
- When shopping, do not leave gifts or packages in view in your vehicle. This serves as an invitation to theft. A better idea if you must leave something in your vehicle is to lock it in the trunk.
- When approaching your vehicle in a parking lot, be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone loitering near your vehicle or in the parking lot, return to the store and request an escort. Do not shop in areas you don’t feel safe.
- Ladies, keep your purses and handbags closed. A skilled pick pocket can easily retrieve a wallet from an open bag.
- Gentlemen, keep your wallets in a front pocket instead of a back pocket. Most pickpockets approach from behind, making it much more difficult to see or notice their actions.
- When attending holiday parties, never be too proud to admit that alcohol has affected your driving skills. Calling a taxi or trusted friend for a ride will not only prevent you from being arrested for drunk driving, but may also prevent an alcohol-related tragedy.
Along with these tips, remember to check over your vehicle as the weather is getting colder:
- If your vehicle seems slow or difficult to start, check your battery. Cold weather makes older vehicle batteries unable to start the vehicle. If the battery is four years older or more, it might be time for a replacement.
- Check your vehicle’s tires. Tires with little or no tread provide little traction as snow and ice accumulate on the road, leading to accidents.
- Always ensure you have enough fuel to arrive at your destination with time to spare. As the weather changes, slow and stopped traffic increases. If you are low on fuel, and get stuck in a long traffic jam, you could run out of fuel in the middle of the road.
- When snow and ice accumulate on your vehicle, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned before driving. Leaving just a single window covered in snow can cause a large blind spot, which could lead to an accident.
If you have any other questions or concerns about the holiday season and how to stay safe, please stop by the police station, located on the Ground Floor of the Administration Building. We are always happy to help you stay safe!

Campus Safety Awareness and Precautions
Common sense is the most valuable tool for most safety situations. To promote a safer, more secure campus, the campus community should remember:
- Carry your Notre Dame College ID while on campus.
- Be alert to any unusual or suspicious individuals or circumstances on campus and report it to the Campus Police/Security Department at x5212.
- Remember that Campus Police/Security patrol the grounds, parking lots, residence halls and all academic buildings.
Despite recent growth, Notre Dame is still a small community. If you notice a situation or individual that seems unusual or out of place, please report it to the Campus Police/Security.
If you are a victim of or a witness to a crime, select this link.

Campus Alert System

Notre Dame College has entered into a public/private partnership to implement the CityWatch Community Notification System. This Campus Alert System gives us the ability to notify the college community in the instance of an emergency or health hazard.
This system allows NDC to send a mass message about the emergency or health hazards with instructions on what to do next. This message can be sent via e-mail, voice telephone, or text message.
All students, faculty, staff, and parents are encouraged to register their landline telephone, cellular telephone, and e-mail addresses into the Campus Alert System database.
Please go to the following web site address to register for the Campus Alert System: www.NotreDameCollege.edu/alert/
