Academic Support Center for Students with Learning Differences

January 26, 2010 in the Great Room,  Guest Speaker Janis Mitchell, consultant to fortune 500 companies, will be speaking on the topic of her own personal experiences with dyslexia and how she has overcome that battle.

The Academic Support Center is accepting applications from students who are interested in the program.

Students at the Academic Support Center

The Mission of the Academic Support Center is to provide quality educational opportunities and support services above and beyond those required by law to individuals with documented learning disabilities who are traditionally under-served in post secondary education. The mission of the Academic Support Center parallels the mission of Notre Dame College which is to educate a diverse population in liberal arts for personal, professional, and global responsibility.

What will the Academic Support Center offer you?

Services offered:

  • Summer Springboard (additional charge)
  • Quarterly Newsletter
  • Monthly Social Meetings
  • Transfer to Action Support Groups with the Cleveland Clinic
  • Awards Day Presentation
  • Workshops on Time Management, Study Skills, Organizational Skills, Reading Comprehension
  • Weekly Individual Appointment with Learning Specialist
  • Professional individual tutoring 1 hour per week per subject
  • Workshop on Use of Adaptive Equipment
  • Unlimited Use of Adaptive Equipment
  • Individual tutoring appointments on the use of adaptive equipment (if needed)
  • Career Competency Grant funded by LDA
  • Open Supervised Study Hall daily
  • Academic Advising
  • Mid-Term Progress Reports
  • Additional individual tutoring appointments if needed and if schedule permits
  • Use of ASC on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Use of ASC on Tuesday & Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Use of ASC on Thursday & Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Services offered based on Individual Documentation:

  • Note-taking assistance
  • Extended time for completing tests
  • Alternative format for taking tests
  • Use of a scribe
  • Distraction free environment
  • Taping of class lectures

Getting help at the Academic Support Center

The services provided by the Academic Support Center are structured and comprehensive thus enabling a student with a documented learning disability to succeed in college. Prior to being admitted to the Center the student must meet the admission requirements of Notre Dame College. To participate in the Academic Support Center, you must be a full-time traditional student, and you must submit documentation of a Learning Disability. This documentation must include a Psycho-Educational Evaluation that has been conducted within the last three years. Refer to web link on documentation.
