Notre Dame College presents its “Books That Changed the World” seminar (see Reading List), offering the opportunity to meet and discuss a common theme using great literary works to examine that theme for the year. This year’s seminar will explore Leadership: The Moral Challenge.
Leaders, emerging leaders and thoughtful citizens will meet to examine the nature of leadership and its moral implications. The question of a leader’s moral responsibility is eternal, but perhaps never more important than during these challenging times. Borrowing from a concept pioneered by Joseph Badaracco at the Harvard Graduate School of Business, the current seminar uses great works of literature as case studies to ask profound questions about the nature of leadership: Is leadership moral? If yes, what does that mean? Moral implies choosing between options – not just strategic, but values-based answers to subtle questions.
The Program
Participants will meet monthly to discuss a great work during a 90-minute session. Two options will be offered: a morning session with breakfast and an evening session with a light supper. The morning session meets on the first Wednesday of the month with breakfast at 7:30, followed by the discussion from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. The evening session meets the second Tuesday of the month starting with a light supper at 6:00 p.m. and followed by the discussion from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
The works chosen for the upcoming year will be used as case studies to ask profound questions about the nature of leadership. Is leadership moral? If leadership is moral, what does that mean? How flexible is my moral code? Do I have a good dream (goals and vision)? Am I ready to take responsibility … and other soul-searching problems for leaders to ponder.
The Presenters
