Joe Magill- Head Coach
3rd Season (2008)

Joe Magill enters his third season as the Head Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach for Notre Dame. Magill also serves as the Assistant Coach for both NDC’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams.

Under Magill, the Falcon program has made great strides in their flagship competitions. The NDC Men’s team has posted top three finishes in the Greater Cleveland College Championships each of the last two seasons. Falcon athletes have also fared well at the AMC Track & Field Championships.

During the Magill Era, 20 NDC athletes have qualified for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Championship competitions and earned six All-American awards.

Before coming to NDC, Magill was an assistant coach at Bowling Green from 2004 -2005. Preceeding his collegiate coaching career, Magill was a high school head coach from 1992-2004.

Magill currently resides in University Heights with his wife, Anna and their one year-old son, Cole.

Jim Schweickert- Assistant Coach
2nd Season (2008)

Jim Schweickert is in his second season as an assistant with the Notre Dame College track program after completing his second season as the Falcons' head cross country coach. He previously served as the interim men's track coach with Notre Dame during the 2005 season.

Prior to NDC, Schweickert served as an assistant cross country and track coach at Hiram College. He had been the head coach of the program earlier in his career for a total of five years.

Additional athletic expertise comes from his 15 year involvement with athletics at both the high school and collegiate levels. He spent five years as the director of athletics at Lake Erie College after previously serving as an assistant track coach at Beachwood High School and the head cross country coach at Laurel School.

Schweickert has a bachelor's degree in history, secondary education from John Carroll University and a master's degree in physical education from Slippery Rock University. He currently resides in Hiram, Ohio with his wife of 11 years, Abra, and his five children, Romanie, Adelaide, Grace, Charlie and newborn Augie.

Mike Shiels-Assistant Coach
6th Season (2008)

The 2007 season marks head coach Mike Shiels' fifth year as an assistant to the Notre Dame College track program after completing his fourth year as the head women's soccer coach. He served as the women's head track coach in 2005.

While in high school, Shiels was a four-year letter winner for the Mentor track team. As a team captain, he was a state qualifier in the 800-meter, in addition to being a four-year regional qualifier.

In college, he went on to be a four-year starter on the Mercyhurst College men's soccer team where he earned first-team all-conference honors and was an all-academic selection. He was also a starting defender at the University of Ireland, Glaway in which his team competed in the All-Ireland National Championship.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Mercyhurst College in anthropology/archaeology and is completing classes towards his master's degree in education. A Mentor, Ohio native, he currently resides in Painesville with his wife Liz and newborn son, Aiden.

David Bellar- Assistant Coach
2nd Season (2008)

The Notre Dame College Department of Athletics has recently announced the hiring of David Bellar as the Assistant Track & Field coach for the upcoming 2007 season. Bellar brings a wealth of experience to the Falcon program as he will specialize with the field events as well as strength and conditioning for the track and fielders.

Bellar comes from St. Peter Chanel High School where he was head track coach for the Firebirds from 2001-2006 as well as head cross country coach from 2001-2005. Prior to his stint with Chanel, he was an assistant track coach at Beachwood High School during the 2000-01 academic year.

Before entering coaching, Coach Bellar was a four-year varsity member of the John Carroll University Track and Field squad where he was team captain his senior year. He earned his B.S. in Biology and Chemisty in 1999 as well as his Master’s in Education in 2001.

In addition to his coaching capabilities, Bellar is a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a United States Track and Field Certified Level II Throws Coach.

Bellar is originally from Pontiac, MI and currently resides in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.


 

Al Benz-Assistant Coach
2nd Season (2007-2008)

Al Benz is in his second year as an assistant at NDC after a long and successful career as an area high school coach. He primarily coaches the hurdles and pole vault but also assists in all areas, especially the jumps and relays.

As head coach at Euclid High School (2004-2006) and Wickliffe High School (1974-1997) Benz qualified 32 individuals and five relays to the Ohio State Track and Field Meet. He also coached one individual state champion. As an assistant coach at Hawken School (1997-2004) he was instrumental in helping the Hawks to two state team championships and five state runner-up finishes. While at Wickliffe his track and field teams won four team titles in the Chagrin Valley Conference and his cross country teams won five. Additionally, his girl’s cross country team finished second in the state in 1989.

A well-known clinician in the hurdles, Benz was a member of the coaching staffs for international competitions in Kenya, China and Hungary and he also was a member of the Medalist Track and Field Advisory Board.

He and his wife, Lynn, live in Novelty.
