Medaling in success
NDC grabs 12 medals at Jack Hazen Open

CANTON, Ohio – The Notre Dame College Track and Field teams competed at tha Jack Hazen Open hosted by Malone College on Saturday. In the unscored event, NDC earned seven medals in the women's field and four in the men's.

Leading the way in the individual medal count was April Wanzo (Sr/Cleveland, OH) who earned Gold in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 12.23. Wanzo picked up her second of the day in the 200 Meter Dash clocking in at 24.76.

The NDC Women's relays continued their winning ways in Canton. Wanzo was joined by Jamyra Davis (So/Galloway, OH), Ariel Baker (Fr/ Maple Heights, OH) and Lauren Hollis (Fr/Mount Vernon, OH) in the 4x100 Meter Relay which landed a new NDC program record with a time of 48.81.

In the 4x400 Meter Relay (Patrick-Hill-Torres-Wanzo), the Falcons picked up the fourth Gold of the day along with another new NDC mark (4:02.18). Closing out Saturday's thriving relay was the team of Melzer-Patrick-Higgins-May in the 4x800 Meter which finished in third place with a time of 10:09.02.

In the field events, freshman Khadiya DeSilva (East Cleveland, OH) earned two medals and as many program marks for her efforts. In the High Jump, she lept to a Silver medal a with a distance of 1.62m. In the Long Jump, she earned Gold with a distance of 5.09m.

The Falcon men had a strong day on the track with three third place finishes in their first three events.. Brandon Tolliver (Fr/Cleveland, OH) started off in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.09. Tom McKrill (Fr/Mentor, OH) followed suit in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 22.74 while Demar Sheffey (Fr/Euclid, OH) earned his Bronze in the 400 Meter (50.51).

Tolliver and McKrill met up with Jason Lockett (So/Cleveland, OH) and Jason George (Fr/Galloway, OH) in the 4x100 Meter relay which added the third Gold (42.90) for NDC relays on the day.

In the 4x400 Meter Relay (McKrill-Sheffey-Kinches-A.Robinson) earned another Gold Medal setting a new NDC program mark with a time of 3:21.48

"This was a big meet with lots of excellent athletes," said Head Coach Joe Magill, "I am thrilled to see several people step up to this level of competition and come through with big performances."

NDC competes next week with a split squad at two different events. The Falcons will be at the Slippery Rock Invitational in Slippery Rock, PA along with the Walsh Invitational in North Canton.

 


NOTES FROM THE NEST...

RECORD RESET: In the Shot Put, Tim Robinson (Fr/Akron, OH) set a new Notre Dame record with a distance of 15.12m. Robinson reset his own record from just the previous week (3/29). Teammate, Tyler Boris (Fr/Toledo, OH) also reset his own record in the Triple Jump. At the Wooster Invitiational, Boris lept to a distance of 12.50m and while in Canton, improved his best jump to 12.60m. Angela Giamei (Jr/Lyndhurst, OH) updated the books, as well in the Triple Jump. The junior leapster finished in eighth place with a distance of 9.68m.

SPRINT STREAK: Both the men's and women's sprint relays (4x100 and 4x400 Meter Relays) are 4-0 over the last two weekends of competition. Last weekend at the Wooster Invitiational, where the Falcon men picked up their first team championship, all four relays swept the top spot of the podium. On Saturday in Canton, the women reset the relay records from their Gold Medal finishes the week before (3/29). The NDC men set a new record in the 4x400 (McKrill-Kinches-Sheffey-A. Robinson) with a time of 3:21.48

ST. LOUIS SEVEN: Just a few meets into the outdoor season, the Falcons have qualified seven athletes for the NAIA Outdoor Championships in St. Louis, May 22-24. Wanzo is qualified in the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes and the 4x100 Meter Relay. Joining Wanzo in the 4x100 Meter Relay is Jamyra Davis, Lauren Hollis and Ariel Baker. Khadiya DeSilva qualified in the High Jump. For the men, Jim Boals (So/North Benton, OH) will compete at his second Nationals in the Discus. Mike Mannozzi (Fr/Youngstown, OH) will compete in the 5,000 Meter Racewalk- a program first for NDC.
