Falcons' Field squad leads the way at Cleveland meet

CLEVELAND – Notre Dame jumped and threw their way to seven medals, as the Track & Field squad competed in their second meet of the season Saturday. Led by stellar performances from male and female athletes in the field events, NDC fared well in the Spartan Relays, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. In the 30 events that comprised the non-team scored event, the Falcons earned 13 medals, including five Gold.

Freshman Ryan Clark earned Gold in the Men's Pole Vault with a school-record vault of 15 feet. Senior Landon Huvler earned a pair of medals in throwing events. Huvler garnered Gold in the Men's Shot Put with a throw of 46-08 3/4, and then picked up a Bronze in the Weight Throw with an NDC-record toss of 43-10.

On the Women's side, freshman Khadiya DeSilva earned a pair of second-place finishes. The NDC newcomer posted an NDC-record 4-11 3/4 in the Women's High Jump and then followed that up with a runner-up performance in the Long Jump.

Freshman Jacque Evans earned Gold in the Women's Shot Put, with a throw of 35-08 1/2.

In the running events, sophomore Cherice May won a Gold and a Silver. May set a new Falcon mark in the Women's Mile Run, with a final time of 5:15.81. That time shattered the previous NDC mark by nearly 20 seconds.

Senior April Wanzo won Gold in the Women's 400 Meter Dash, with a time of 58.16 seconds.

Overall, Notre Dame captured 13 medals on the day at CWRU's Veale Center. The team earned five Gold, four Silver, and four Bronze. The Men's team earned five medals (2/0/3), while the women won eight (3/4/1).

The performance sends the combined Men's and Women's squads into a 12-day break before their next meet. The Falcons will next compete Feb. 8, when they travel to Berea for the B-W Invitational.

NOTES FROM THE NEST...

FLEDGLING FALCONS: Top NDC performances Saturday included several veterans, but newcomers on both the Men's and Women's squad fared especially well. Falcon freshmen combined to garner six individual medals (2/2/2). In addition, two freshmen (Andre Robinson and Demar Sheffey) were on the Bronze-winning Men's 4x400 Meter Relay team for NDC.

LUCKY 13: Notre Dame also won 13 medals at last year's Spartan Relay meet (Jan. 27, 2007). The 2008 effort, however, included two more Gold medals; the Falcons won three events a year ago, compared to five won on Saturday... Both Cherice May and April Wanzo earned medals at the CWRU meet in both 2007 and 2008.
