Falcon relay makes national meet cut
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Notre Dame College Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams traveled to Toledo, OH for the 23rd Annual Toledo Invitational. While the meet was unscored, the Falcons used the afternoon to get a few more events under their belt prior to NAIA National Championships May25-27 in Fresno, CA.
In the 400m dash, April Wanzo (Jr/Cleveland, OH) took home another gold medal this season with a 56.01 finish, just two hundredths of a second off her own program record.
Maggie Cooper (Fr/Euclid, OH) finished in 16th place in the shot put but set a new school record with a distance of 10.67m.
In the men’s competition, the 100m dash boasted two top ten finishes with Anthony Tackett (Fr/Waverly, OH) in fifth with a time of 11.00 while Brian Bruce (Jr/Cleveland, OH) finished in tenth place in 11.29 seconds.
Chris Woodfork (So/Chillicothe, OH) also notched a top-ten finish in the 200m dash when finished in 22.31 seconds good enough for fifth place. Curtis Brown (Jr/Richmond Heights, OH) finished fourth in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 16.66.
The strongest race of the day came in the Men’s 4x100m relay. The team comprised of Brian Bruce, Chris Woodfork, Charles Wilson-Brown and Anthony Tackett launched themselves to a bronze medal finish time of 42.28. The third place touch also sends the Falcons to NAIA Championships.
“It’s exciting to finally get a relay to Nationals. Last year our guys missed by a few hundredths of a second, which was excruciating. On another strong note, their handoffs weren’t particularly strong today either so there will be a lot of room to grow with that relay,” said Head Coach Joe Magill.
NDC travels one more time for one more chance for an NAIA qualifying time when they compete on May 11 at the Cedarville Qualifier in Cedarville, OH.
