Royal and Gold make final preparations for conference meet
SLIPPERY ROCK, Penn. - After a two week hiatus from competition, the Notre Dame College Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field teams competed at the Slippery Rock Invitational among some of the highest quality athletes in the region. Both teams performed well and earned a few top honors with the women’s team bringing home three top finishes admidst snowy and blustery track conditions.
While the Falcons only brought home one medal from the meet, a lot of improvements and adjustments were made in preparation for the American Mideast Conference Championship Meet on April 20-21. In the 100m dash, Brian Bruce (Jr/Cleveland, OH) finished in 14th for the Falcons with a time of 11.67. In the 800m run, Jeremy Kinches (Jr/Richfield, OH) finished in 10th place with a time of 2:01.42 while teammates Joshua Kinches (Sr/Richfield, OH) and Kyle Komer (So/North Royalton, OH) finished in 15th and 19th, respectively.
The Royal and Gold picked up a few more top ten finishes throughout the day. Komer finished 10th in the 1500m run, while Greg Chmielecki (Sr/Parma, OH) finished in the number ten spot in the 110m hurdles.
One of the best performances of the day came in the 3000m steeplechase where Will Cleveland (Jr/Cleveland, OH) finished in eighth place with a new school record of 10:15.99.
The lone bronze medal was awarded to Sean Cornell (So/Ravenna, OH) in the high jump where he lept to a 1.85m distance to seal third place. Justin Longstreet (Fr/Cleveland, OH) finished fourth.
The NDC track squads travel to Houghton, NY for the two-day American Mideast Championship meet hosted by Houghton College.
“Heading into next week’s conference meet, I expect that we’ll earn a lot more points and place a lot higher both individually and as a team,” Magill said.
