Six golds, plethora of top finishes at Tiffin
TIFFIN, Ohio - The Notre Dame College Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams made their 2007 outdoor debut in high fashion on Friday, Mar. 23. The NDC Falcons returned back to South Euclid with a slew of top finishes including six gold medals, seven silver and six gold for a combined 19 medal-worthy appearances.
The first five races of the day let the competition know that NDC is now a force to be reckoned with in Ohio. Jamyra Davis (Fr/Galloway, OH) came in second place in the 100m dash, clocking in at 13.24. In the next four races, April Wanzo (Jr/Cleveland, OH) and Cherice May (Fr/Euclid, OH) took home two first place finishes apiece. Wanzo finished the 200m dash in 25.51, only one second off the program record. She then went on to a gold medal time of 58.25 in the 400m dash. May took home the gold in the 800m run (2:23.90) and the 1500m (5:01.40). May’s 1500 time also sets a new NDC outdoor record demolishing the previous record by 27 seconds.
Other top track performances included Allie Rendlesham who took home third place in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 12:37.92. The NDC 4x800m relay comprised of May, Rendlesham, Jen Rohn (So/Macedonia, OH) and Wanzo finished in second place with a new record time of 10:09.53.
In the field, pole vaulter Amanda Corrigan (Sr/Wickliffe, OH) not only finished in the top slot of the competition but also broke her own program record with a 2.97m performance. Angela Giamei (So/Lyndhurst, OH) finished in second place with a height of 2.59m.
On the men’s side, familiar faces stayed with the ranks. The dynamic sprinting duo or Chris Woodfork (So/Chillicothe, OH) and Anthony Tackett (Fr/Waverly, OH) finished in second and third places, respectively in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Tackett finished third in the high jump, as well while Woodford also took home his own bronze in the long jump.
In the 400m dash, Jeremy Kinches (Jr/Richfield, OH) finished third with a time of 51.48. Classmate Will Cleveland (Cleveland, OH) raced to a 10:29.08 finish in the 3000m steeplechase, good enough for a bronze medal. Finishing up the day was freshman Jim Boals who won his first outdoor competition in the discus throw with a distance on 42.90m.
The Royal and Gold runners will compete again on Saturday, March 31 when they travel to Cedarville, OH for the Cedarville Outdoor Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00am
