Records Set at Wooster Invitational

Wooster, OH--  The Notre Dame College Women’s Swimming Team continued to make strides this past weekend at the College of Wooster Swimming and Diving Invitational in Wooster, OH. The Falcons finished in eighth place out of ten teams with a total of 224 points.

The team came in well-rested and in position to achieve personal bests and top times before heading into their week-long winter training trip in Fort Lauderdale, FL in January. The three-day championship format was a good test for the Falcons to measure their progress thus far in their inaugural season.

The three day meet did just that with over ten personal records or season bests set. The 500 Yard Freestyle proved to be the lucky event for the Falcons. Freshman Emily Perkins (Cincinnati, OH) placed the highest for the Royal and Gold and finished first in her heat of consolation finals. She touched in eight seconds faster than her preliminary race with a time of 5:36.25.  Freshmen Stephanie Pion (Standish, ME), Ashley Blaser (Bloomville, OH) and Sophomore Annie Poluse (Painesville, OH) all swam personal best times in the event. Pion was also a finalist in the 400 Yard Individual Medley and had personal records in the 400 IM and 200 Yard Breastroke.

Perkins came back to South Euclid with an assortment of accomplishments from the meet. In addition to winning her Finals heat in the 500 Freestyle, she also had season bests in the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:07.55) and the 200 Yard Backstroke (2:18.27). Her 100 Yard Backstroke and 200 Backstroke performances also earned her an invitation to the NAIA National Meet.

Freshman Shannan Fitzgerald (Hewitt, NJ) swam three personal record races with three appearances in the Finals. In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, she dropped six seconds from her preliminary time to a first place finish in the Consolation Final with a time of 2:19.75.  In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Fitzgerald swam to yet another personal record and 14th place finish with a time of 1:05.14. Her top race of the weekend came in the 200 Yard Butterfly where she touched in to an overall third place finish in 2:18.18.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Kelly O’Connor (Peoria, AZ) was a finalist as she swam a personal best with a time of 26.57 during the preliminary race. She finished 21st overall. O’Connor also achieved a personal best in the 100 Yard Breastroke (1:17.24).

Freshmen Maggie Lusnia (North Olmsted, OH) and Tiffany Alonzo (Corpus Christi, TX) achieved top times in their races, as well.

In the relay events, the Falcons shaved off time in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 400 Medley. In the 200 Freestyle relay, the team comprised of Alonzo, Perkins, Fitzgerald and O’Connor touched in with a time of 1:47.52, which is a new team record. In the 400 Medley, the same swimmers competed to a 13th place finish with a time of 4:25.66, over four seconds faster than the previous team record.

Heading into the semester break, the swimmers will be out of competitive waters until January 5th when they start up winter training in Fort Myers Beach, FL. Their next meet is scheduled for January 13, 2007 at NCAA Division III Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH. The meet begins at 1pm.
