Women Swimmers Fall to Polar Bears but Continue to Make the Cut
Ada, OH-- The Notre Dame College Women’s Swimming squad fell to the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University on Saturday, November 11, 2006 by a score of 150-68. Despite the loss, more program records were broken and NAIA National Championship Meet cutoff times were met.
Freshman Emily Perkins (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) logged a pair of victories in the 500 Yard Freestyle and the 1000 Yard Freestyle. In the 500 Freestyle, Perkins touched in with a time of 5:34.04 which was a huge drop of nearly seven seconds from her previous race in the event. In addition, her time also earned her an official cut for the National Meet in March and a program record.
Teammate, Shannan Fitzgerald (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford Township) also reigned victoriously. Fitzgerald clocked in first with a time of 2:23.24 in the 200 Yard Butterly and also made an NAIA National cut. In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, Fitzgerald was touched out by Ohio Northern’s Kim Randall by only six tenths of a second as she finished in 2:22.70 earning yet another bid to the National Meet. In addition, Fitzgerald also notched a program best in both the Individual Medley and 200 Butterfly.
In the final event of the day, the Falcons missed the gold by finishing merely seconds behind the Polar Bears in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The relay comprised of Fitzgerald, Kelly O’Connor (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain), Tiffany Alonzo (Corpus Christi, TX/Tuloso-Midway) and Perkins stroked their way to a 3:57.11 finish and an invitation to Nationals.
The Royal and Gold swimmers don’t jump off the starting blocks again until after Thanksgiving break when they attend the College of Wooster Invitational scheduled for Thursday, November 30 through Saturday, December 2, 2006. The Wooster Invite will be their last meet before winter training in Fort Myers, FL.
