Susan Hlavacek Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

Susan Hlavacek came to Notre Dame College in 1996, bringing with her many years of experience as a coach, teacher and administrator. A native of Cleveland, Ohio and a 1980 graduate of Cleveland State University, she lettered in each of her four years in both basketball and volleyball and was named Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year three separate years. A First-Team All-Ohio basketball and volleyball selection, Hlavacek was voted Most Valuable Player in basketball each of her four years with the Vikings. In 1991, she became the first woman to be inducted into CSU’s Hall-of-Fame.

After college, Hlavacek was drafted by the Philadelphia Fox for the Women’s Basketball League (WBL), the first women’s professional basketball league in the United States. After playing in Philadelphia, she returned home to Cleveland where she began her teaching and coaching career with the Mayfield City School District. During her nine-year tenure at Mayfield, she was head basketball coach from 1981 to 1984 and head volleyball coach from 1981 to 1989. In both 1982 and 1985, the year she coached her volleyball team to the sectional championship, she earned the title of Greater Cleveland Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year.

In 1990, she joined the faculty of Laurel School, a private school in Cleveland’s suburbs. Within her seven-year tenure at Laurel as a physical education teacher, she also served as department chair (1993 - 95) and as director of athletics for grades 7 through 12 (1994 – 97). Keeping her hand in coaching, she was the head volleyball coach during her stint at Laurel, earning sectional and district championships in 1992. In 1995, she was selected as Volleyball Coach of the Year for District IV.

Moving on to college administration, Hlavacek became the director of athletics at Notre Dame College in 1996. Since her arrival, she has been instrumental in allowing the athletic program to blossom into 17 varsity teams, 13 more than when she began. The department also added the Pep Band and Dance Team under her direction. Her leadership was recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), which named her Administrator of the Year in October of 2003. She was also honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as a GeneralSports TURF Systems AD of the Year (ADOY) in June 2004. Additionally, she was inducted into the James Rhodes High School Hall of Fame in 2003.

She is serving on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four Committee in 2007 with Cleveland, Ohio as the site of this year’s event. She currently resides in Macedonia, Ohio.
