Dodge Shoots Down Old Record, Scores New One
South Euclid, OH – December 23, 2003 - Notre Dame College men’s basketball player Mike Dodge earned his first start of the season against Lake Erie College Tuesday when the Falcons’ leading scorer, Dave Hilborn, remained sidelined with an injury. Within the first 20 minutes of play, Dodge put on a shooting clinic that proved he was ready for the opportunity, as well as a spot in the record books.
At the 16-minute mark, Dodge put in his first 3-pointer of the night off a pass from point guard Chad Hazard. Less than one minute later, Dodge spotted up for two from the wing on another Hazard pass. The sharp shooter went on to hit six more long-range bombs in the first half of play, giving the Falcons a comfortable 17-point lead as they headed to the locker room.
Head Coach Kevin Bille was thrilled with the shooter’s touch, “It was a great performance by Mike and one that you love watching as a coach. He was unconscious! Even the one he missed in the first half looked like it was going in.”
Dodge’s hot hand cooled off in the second half as Notre Dame earned a 97-71 win over the Storm. He finished the game with 25 points and a shooting percentage of 82 percent after connecting on 7-of-9 three-point attempts. He also set a new school record for three-point field goals made in a single game with seven. The previous record was set during the 2001-02 season at five.
“I am extremely happy for him because he works hard all the time and this is a complete result of that,” said Bille of the new record set by Dodge.
To top off the performance, Dodge was selected as the News-Herald Local College Player of the Week.
A player of the week is featured once a week in the newspaper. The honoree is chosen out of all eligible men’s and women’s basketball players from the college.
