Jonke Earns AMC Player of the Week as Falcons Move to Third in Regional Rankings
South Euclid, OH – September 15, 2004 - It was a record opening for the Notre Dame College Falcon men's soccer program this year, largely in part due to freshman Frank Jonke.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada, the forward kicked off his collegiate debut in history-making fashion. In the Falcons' season opening game against Ohio Valley College (W.Va.), Jonke exploded for four goals in the 10-0 rout.
In a later match against Concordia College (Mich.), Jonke outdid his first-time college effort by scorching the net for six of Notre Dame's 10 goals, marking the team's second shutout of the season and increasing his individual season total to 14 goals. The performance also tied a program record for goals scored in a single game.
Now at the seven-game mark, Jonke is holding steady at the top of the American Mideast Conference in both goals (2.0) and points (4.14) per game. Even more remarkably, he is averaging one goal every 27 minutes of play, a statistic that helped him become the AMC's Offensive Player of the Week, which was announced Monday.
The honor is the first for the four-year old Notre Dame College men's soccer program and is based on individual nominations from a possible 17 men's soccer members of the AMC, which is the largest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) conference in the nation.
In addition, Jonke's performance aided the Falcons' move into the third spot of the most recent NAIA Men's Soccer Region IX Rankings.
Notre Dame is currently 4-2-1.
