Student-Athletes attend Orientation
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio –The 2008 school year has been business as usual; that is until the kick off of the first-ever student-athlete orientation. On Monday, Sept. 10th, the entire Notre Dame student-athlete body gathered in Murphy Gymnasium to learn more about the legal landscape within the intercollegiate athletic life.
Dave Armstrong, Dean of Admissions and Legal Counsel Specialist discussed various legal issues, which are prominent among colleges and universities across the United States. Specifically, Dean Armstrong focused considerably on the Jeanne Clery Act, which strongly addresses the requirement and disclosure of crime statistics and information on and around their campuses.
Following the Dean’s informative presentation, the NDC Women’s Lacrosse team addressed the prominence and affects of hazing within college communities not just within athletic teams but all campus groups. Team members researched the sensitive topic and presented information citing specific examples, consequences and preventative measures.
The 2008 orientation event proved to be very successful in the eyes of administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.
“Hazing is a serious issue,” said Director of Athletics, Sue Hlavacek, “I’m very proud of the Women’s Lacrosse team in taking this kind of initiative to educate their peers.”
