Baseball bolsters coaching staff

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College announced today a restructuring of their Baseball coaching staff.  Head Coach Craig Moro introduced a six-man staff, which includes the hiring of a full-time Assistant/Pitching Coach.

The program was bolstered with several new additions, with both Moro and one assistant returning from 2007.  The makeup of the new NDC coaching staff:

* Nick Weisheipl – Pitching Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
* Damien Blakeley – Graduate Assistant (Second Team Head Coach & Hitting Instructor)
* Anthony James – Student Coach (Baseball Operations)
* WJ Behlke – Fundraising Coordinator/Second Team Assistant
* Justin Ross-Walker - Conditioning Coordinator/Second Team Assistant
* Ken Klingbeil – Baseball Intern/Video Coordinator

“This is a good step for our program to take,” said Moro, who took the helm of NDC Baseball when the program was instituted in 2005.  “These are quality individuals who understand the attention to detail that a winning program must have.”

Baseball Coaching StaffWeisheipl comes to College Road from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he was an Assistant Coach in 2007.  Weisheipl also coached for Clark College (Dubuque, Iowa) from 2004-06 and in the Northwood Collegiate Summer League in 2005-07.

Weisheipl is a 2003 graduate of Beloit College (WI), where he pitched and played infield outfield from 1999-2002.   Weisheipl played professional baseball for the Regensburg Legionaere in Germany in 2003, where he led the league (First Bundesliga) in on-base percentage, walks, runs scored, and saves.  At NDC, Weisheipl will handle the Falcon pitching staff and head the program’s recruiting efforts.

Blakeley will serve as NDC’s Hitting Instructor.  He is finishing his degree in Criminal Justice at Notre Dame in the current academic year, and was a member of NDC’s basketball team in 2006-07 after transferring to Notre Dame from St. Bonaventure (PA).  Blakeley played basketball and baseball for the Bonnies.  In 2002, the catcher/outfielder from Mentor, Ohio, was named as an Honorable Mention on the Freshman All-America team by Collegiate Baseball.  Blakeley also played two years of professional baseball with the Kalamazoo Kings (Frontier League, 2005-06).  In addition to his duties as Hitting Instructor, Blakeley will also serve as Second Team Head Coach for the Falcons.

James returns to reprise his role as Student Coach, which he began in the 2007 season.  James was the starting catcher for the Falcons in 2005 and 2006, earning a nod on the All-American Mideast Conference North Division Second Team in 2006.  James coordinates Baseball Operations, serves as outfield instructor, and coaches first base.  He is finishing his degree in Education at Notre Dame in the current academic year.

Behlke was a player for the Falcons in 2006 and 2007 and returns to serve the program in the position of Fundraising Coordinator.  Behlke played at Grand Rapids Community College in 2004 and 2005, before transferring to NDC.  While at Grand Rapids, he played on two JUCO World Series teams (2004-05).  As a team captain for NDC in 2007, Behlke earned Second Team All-AMC North honors, posting a .414 on-base percentage with 13 stolen bases.  He is finishing his degree in Accounting at Notre Dame in the current academic year.  In addition to his duties as Fundraising Coordinator, Behlke will also serve as Second Team Assistant Coach for the Falcons.

Ross-Walker comes to College Road after pitching for the University of Rio Grande for three seasons.  He is finishing his degree in Education at Notre Dame in the current academic year.  Ross-Walker will assist with the NDC conditioning program.

Ken Klingbeil played for Cuyahoga Community College for two years (2004-05) before transferring to Notre Dame, where he pitched for the Falcons in 2006 and 2007, making a combined 25 appearances and serving as team captain in his senior season.  Kleingbeil will serve as the Falcons’ Baseball Intern and assist in video recording and analysis.  He will also assist with the operations of NDC’s Second Team.

Notre Dame Baseball completed its third season in May. Under Craig Moro, the Falcons earned an 18-28 record while setting program marks for runs scored (277), extra-base hits (110), and batting average (.307).
