NDC earns first-ever win over Ohio Wesleyan

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College Lacrosse team defeated Ohio Wesleyan 15-11 on Friday to conclude a four-game homestand at Korb Field. The win for NDC (8-3) marks their eighth in a row while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 3-4 on the season. The Falcon victory is the first win over the Battling Bishops in program history. NDC is now 1-5 against Ohio Wesleyan since the programs 2005 inception.

The Battling Bishops got on the scoreboard first with two goals in the first four minutes of play.Gena McPherson (So/Brampton, ONT) tied it up at 22:02 following her first two scores of the game, both feeds from April Pegler (Jr/Bryn Mawr, PA). Ashley Rutz (Fr/Milton, ONT) gave NDC their first lead five minutes later but OWU's Haleigh Rohr (So/Nelson, NH) would tie it back up at three apiece with 16 minutes remaining in the half.

The two teams would remained tied at 5-5 by the 5:29 mark after two more goals were nabbed by Pegler and McPherson from NDC and from Julia Fouts (Sr/Cleveland Heights, OH) and Polly Burke (Milton, MA) for the Battling Bishops.

In the last possession of the half, NDC slowed it down before taking the final shot with just 15 seconds left. Molly Merrill (Jr/Medina, OH) put the Blue and Gold up 6-5 headed into intermission.

The second half became a game of runs for both team but the Falcon were able to string together a 9-2 over 22 minutes to build a 15-7 lead. McPherson, Rutz and Pegler combined for eight of the nine goals while Jenna Schuerman (Jr/Savage, MN) accounted for the ninth, as well as the game winner to secure the lead for NDC.

OWU rallied with four of their own unanswered scores in the final seven minutes but NDC was able to hold on for the win.

Kylie Flett (Sr/Adelaide, Australia) made five saves in the win while OWU's Maggie Eichenlaub (Sr/Crystal, MN) tallied four.

NDC scoring was lead by Pegler who finished with a personal season high seven points from four goals and three assists. Rutz ended the day with five scores and one helper.

The Bishops were lead by Fouts who finished with a hat trick, all coming from free position goals.

The Falcons' next game is scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 16 when they travel to Wayneburg, Penn. to take on Waynesburg College. The game is slated for a 4:30pm start.

 

NOTES FROM THE NEST...

SHARPSHOOTING: With four goals against Ohio Wesleyan, Gena McPherson not only leads the team in goals this season with 36, her shot percentage also tops the Falcon leader board. On the season, McPherson is 36-for-59 (61.0 percent) on all shots. The sophomore midfielder also leads the team in total points with 41 (36g, 5a). McPherson's shot percentage is up from 40.0% (42-for-105) in her freshman season.

MOVIN' ON UP: Staci Myrup's (So/Murray, UT) two caused turnovers against Ohio Wesleyan moved her up to second place in NDC all-time career caused turnovers with 49. Myrup has amassed 21 forced turnovers this season which leads the team. Kylie Flett leads all Falcons in career CTs with 76 over four seasons.
