Falcons fly over Tigers
Strong defensive play in first half puts up sixth win
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -
Lately it’s seemed like another night at Korb Field, means another win for the Notre Dame College Women’s Lacrosse team. The NDC Laxers (6-2) picked up their sixth consecutive win of the season with a 13-4 victory over the Wittenberg University Tigers (1-3).
After a 19-7 loss last year, the Falcons were ready for redemption. Stacey Gowe (Fr/Medina, OH) got NDC on the board just two and a half minutes into the first half with a shot that got past Wittenberg’s Sarah Zane.
With steady possession, speed and accuracy, the Falcons built up a 9-0 lead heading into the half. The first-half shutout was in part possible from outstanding play between the pipes by goalkeeper Kylie Flett (Jr/Adelaide, AUS) who saved all six Tiger shots on goal. Marissa Lundgren (Fr/Uniontown, OH) also saw time in the cage and made one save against Wittenberg.
It wasn’t until 11 minutes remained in the second half and NDC was up 12-0, that the Tigers could penetrate the stifling Falcon defense and sneak one past Flett. Amber Cupples picked up three goals for Wittenberg while Lauren Stets scored the remaining goal.
Jenna Schuerman (So/Savage, MN) lead the Falcon scoring barrage with three goals and two assists while Gena McPherson (Fr/Brampton, ON) nabbed four goals, all of which came in the first half. Molly Merrill also had four points on the night with two goals and two assists. Gowe finished the day with two goals while Sarah Hutchison (Fr/Powell, OH) also finished with two points (1g, 1a). Rosie Garam (Fr/Mentor, OH) picked up one score for the Falcons. Tessa Bluntzer (Jr/Houston, TX) and Jo Bauswein (So/Chagrin Falls, OH) had one assist each.
The next Falcon lacrosse game is slated for Friday, March 30 when the second team host Earlham College at Korb Field at 7pm. NDC travels to Latrobe, PA on Sunday, April 1 to take on St. Vincent College.
Notes from the Nest…
N is for…Number of goals scored. In the last six games, the Falcons have outscored the opponent 95-32
D is for…Defensive Ride. It’s not the just defense that gets the ball back. Offensive midfielders Sarah Hutchison, Gena McPherson and Jenna Schuerman have also combined for 44 caused turnovers on the offensive ride when the opponent is trying to clear the ball out of their defensive end
C is for…Caused Turnovers. A strong defensive effort by Holly Joseph (So/Lapeer, MI), Jo Bauswein, Staci Myrup (Fr/Murray, UT), Emily Jones (Fr/Kent, OH), Emily Moore (Fr/Akron, OH) and Jenn Adams (Fr/Mayfield Heights, OH) has lead the Falcons to a caused turnovers per game average of 20.4. Myrup leads the team with 20 on the season
