NDC sophomore medals, Falcons win tourney

GREENVILLE, Penn. - Notre Dame earned a tournament victory Monday, beating back a field of five other squads in winning the Theil Invitational in Greenville, Penn.  Sophomore Tony Pinzone (Parma, OH) earned medalist honors in the event, with a 74, and Chris Holz (Sr/Parma, OH) finished in a tie for third with a 77.  NDC fired a four-man score of 316 to win by 22 strokes over the 6,512-yard Greens of Greenville course.  The six-team invitational was hosted by Theil College.

Pinzone, who placed 14th in the Falcons' spring opener Saturday (Pat Flowers Invitational), continued a streak of excellent ball striking - he hit 12 greens. The Parma native has hit 34-of-45 greens (75.6 percent) through NDC's first two spring events. His 74 comes on the heels of a 76 carded at Fowlers Mill Golf Course on Saturday.

Holz also was on target with his approach shots. The senior from Holy Name Academy hit 13 greens and played the last 11 holes in even-par.

David McCaig (Sr/Stewarton, Scotland) and Rob Kline (So/Macedonia, OH) posted NDC's other two scores (80 and 85, respectively). Both finished in the Top-15, as Notre Dame dominated the six-team field for the second time in three years. The Falcons also won the Theil Invitational in 2006.

"Tony did a nice job," said NDC Head Coach Kevin Bille. "He is in a zone right now with his swing. He didn't really even putt that well, which is a testament to how well he's hitting the ball."

The win sends Notre Dame into their next event with a 16-22 record on the 2007-08 season. The Falcons will next compete this Friday and Saturday at the 36-hole Mount Vernon Invitational at Apple Valley Golf Club in Howard, Ohio. The tournament will be hosted by Mt. Vernon Nazarene University.

AND ONE: Freshman Andy Minno (Akron, OH) posted an individual score for NDC Monday in Greenville. The Coventry High School product carded an 82 to finish tied for 10th.

MAGIC NUMBER: The Notre Dame program, in its fourth season, has now won two tournaments. Both have come at the Theil Invitational. The Falcons also won the event in 2006, coincidentally with the same team score, 316.
