PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Notre Dame closed out their calendar year with a second straight blowout loss at the Wendy's/BW-3 Classic Saturday. The Falcons fell to Campbellsville University (KY), 94-58, less than 18 hours after losing 90-60 to Shawnee State. For the second straight game, the Falcons' offense, which came into the two-day invitational as one of the top offensive teams in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), struggled shooting the ball.
Notre Dame (9-3) was outscored 47-25 in the first half and 47-33 in the second, while shooting just 27.7 percent (18-for-65) game. In losing both games at the Wendy's/BW-3 Classic, the Falcons dropped consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 26-27, 2007. The four-team invitational was hosted by Shawnee State University.
Much like they did the night before, the Falcons fell behind early Saturday afternoon at the James A. Rhodes Arena. Campbellsville (9-6) sprinted out to a 15-6 lead, with NDC misfiring on 14 of their first 16 attempts from the field. By 7:07, the Lady Tigers had a 38-12 advantage. They would head to their locker room with a 22-point lead at halftime, with the Falcons hitting just eight field goals in twenty minutes.
The second half was played evenly for ten minutes or so. But Notre Dame was unable to mount a charge or cut significantly into what was a 20-point-plus lead for CU all half. The Lady Tigers closed out the game by going on a 21-6 run over the game's final seven minutes. For the game, the CU bench outscored the NDC bench, 52-13.
The Campbellsville defense held the Falcons' top two scorers, Molly Baker (Jr/Avon Lake, OH) and Ashley Carney (Jr/Solon, OH), to a combined eight points on 3-of-22 shooting. Junior forward Jamie Henry (Garfield Heights, OH) led the NDC effort with a double-double. Henry scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Amanda Brown (Vienna, VA) scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds.
Sophomore guard Alexia Williams (Campbellsville, KY) scored 16 points off the Lady Tigers' bench to lead the charge for CU. Six Campbellsville players scored in double digits.
The Lady Tigers also dominated the Falcons on the glass - CU out-rebounded NDC, 60-44, and picked up 21 offensive rebounds. The Falcons have now been out-rebounded in seven of their last eight games.
The loss closes out 2007 for the Falcons, who will be off for 11 days before their next scheduled game. NDC will resume their schedule Thursday, Jan. 10, when they travel to Pittsburgh for their American Mideast Conference (AMC) opener at Carlow. Beginning with their game against the Celtics, the next five games on the NDC schedule are AMC North contests. The NDC Women placed third in the North last season, with a 9-5 conference mark. The Falcons own an AMC-North record of 37-13 over the last three years (.740 winning percentage).
