Frank Romano returns as the head coach of the Notre Dame wrestling program for it's second season. After a spectacular inaugural year, Romano will be at the helm of an already nationally recognized program.
In 2007, the Falcons had five wrestlers participate in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Championship meet and completed the season with one grappler being named to the NAIA All-American squad.
Prior to NDC, Romano served as head coach at Kent State University from 1996-2003. While with the Golden Flashes, Romano coached three All-Americans, 64 national qualifiers and 44 Mid-American Conference (MAC) individual champions. He compiled an overall record of 99-41-1 as the head coach and 150-58-3 from 1981-96 as an assistant with the program.
Romano has more than 35 years of coaching experience on his resume which includes time at Aurora High School, St. Edward High School, Kenston Local School District, Elyria City Schools and Maple Heights City Schools.
As a coach, Romano has received honors such as the Northeastern Ohio Coach of the Year, Chagrin Valley Coach of the Year, Buckeye Conference Coach of the Year and Greater Cleveland Conference Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1988.
Romano, a former wrestler at Maple Heights High School where he won two Ohio State Championships. At Ohio State University, the two-year team captain was a three-time NCAA qualifier, two-time Big Ten place winner, an Ohio U.S. Wrestling Federation champion and a U.S. East-West All-Star.
He continued his wrestling career after college and was an Ohio Federation Champion, and AAU Freestyle Champion and a participant in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Romano has a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Ohio State and a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration from Kent State.
