Successful Falcons’ Road Tripp
Ashland, OH – Seven members of the new Notre Dame College wrestling program traveled to Ashland, Ohio Saturday for the Harris Auto Center Open and posted top-six performances in their respective weight classes. Though wrestling in an individual event, the NDC mat men acquitted themselves quite well, serving notice to the wrestling community that the Falcons could be serious contenders as their winter schedule gets in full gear.
The individual performances by the Royal and Gold were highlighted by the program’s first weight class victory. Chris Tripp (SO/University School/Cleveland, OH) placed first at 184, becoming the first NDC wrestler to win an event.
Several of the placing Falcon grapplers were getting their first taste of wrestling at the collegiate level when their mostly-freshman squad took to the mats against established programs from across the Midwest. NDC also got a taste of Ashland, which will host two other events on the upcoming Falcon schedule.
Besides noting Tripp’s win, Head Coach Frank Romano offered accolades to Brent Weisenstein (FR, Ashland HS, Ashland, OH), who placed fourth at 157 and Justin Tripp (FR/Cuy. V. Christian Aca./Cleveland, OH), who placed fourth in the highweight class. Rounding out the Notre Dame top-six finishers were Tyler Savage (FR/Carlisle HS/Lima, OH), Bryce Freeman (FR/Berkshire HS/Burton, OH), Nate Spencer (Mayfield HS, KSU/Newbury,OH), and Matt Morgan (FR/West Hills HS, Lakeland CC/Burbank, CA).
The Royal and Gold return to the mats in Ashland Saturday, December 2, for the Simpson Invitational.
