American Indian Artist/Activist Exhibits
at Notre Dame College

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio-24 February 2003-Notre Dame College and its Tolerance Resource Center present "Home of the Brave," a multi-media art installation by American Indian artist and activist, Charlene Teters, March 14-April 17 in the college's Performing Arts Center. Teters, an artist, educator, writer, and activist challenges the inappropriate use of American Indian symbols through her multimedia art installations, writings and lectures. Her work focuses particularly on athletic teams, the media, corporations, museums and schools and how they depict American Indian culture and spirituality.

A member of the Spokane nation, she is a founding board member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media. Her work has often served as a lightning rod for change, leading to some progress in the U.S. and Canada. Her words and mission are now being repeated by Indian peoples in Central America.

Teters, a professor at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois as well as degrees from the College of Santa Fe and the Institute of American Indian Arts. She has served as Senior Editor of Native Artists Magazine.

Teters recently worked as Artist-in-Residence at the American Museum of Natural History in New York where she exhibited an installation titled 'Baseball and Playing Indian.' The exhibit changed daily, based on her experiences and exchanges with the public.

Teters' history of public challenges is the subject of an award-winning documentary, "In Whose Honor" by Jay Rosenstein, which received national attention.

Notre Dame will also sponsor programs for educators and the general public in conjunction with the exhibit. For information contact Rachel Morris, 216-373-5320 or rmorris@ndc.edu.
