Tolerance Resource Center Continues Tenth Anniversary Celebration

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—9 January 2008—Notre Dame College continues the celebration of its Tolerance Resource Center’s tenth anniversary through the spring semester.

The commemoration, which began last fall, continues with a dramatic reading, “Walk, Don’t Ride: The Fight for Freedom in America,” which pays homage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement in Montgomery, Alabama. An original production by Notre Dame College theater professor Peter Manos, it takes place Tuesday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

“School System,” an art installation by Ben Blount, explores race in America. It opens at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22 in the Performing Arts Center and runs through February 15. The exhibit is open 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

A staged reading of “All Things Being Equal,” written by local playwright Faye Sholiton, takes place Saturdays February 2 and February 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays February 3 and February 10 at 2:00 p.m. The reading is presented by the Notre Dame College theater department and will be followed by a question and answer period with the playwright at each performance.

Sr. Eileen Quinlan, SND, Ph.D., presents “That the People May Live:  the Importance of Faith in the Native American Communities” Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. She will talk about her experiences with Native American Christian Groups and her research during a recent sabbatical.

The final speaker of the series is Dr. James Waller, professor of psychology at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington who specializes in race relations in the U.S., and holocaust and genocide studies.

Dr. Waller is the author of “Face to Face: the Changing State of Racism Across America,” “Prejudice Across America,” and the newly updated edition of “Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing.”

The Tolerance Resource Center, located in the College’s Clara Fritzsche Library, provides students, faculty, scholars, and the greater community with materials for studying and teaching issues of racial, cultural and religious diversity in the world around them. The collection includes books, periodicals, video recordings, and curriculum materials on tolerance and diversity, teaching the Holocaust, and Native American issues.
