For Girls and Women
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—12 January 2005-- Notre Dame College presents a workshop for girls and young women that addresses problems created by the negative depiction of women in popular media. The program shows participants how to be critical consumers of media and the stereotypes it portrays. The PicturePerfect Media Literacy Project takes place Friday, February 11, 7-9:00 p.m. and Saturday, February12, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. The Friday program is geared toward adults and the Saturday program addresses girls and young women. Both are at Notre Dame College in South Euclid.
The centerpiece of both days is the film, PicturePerfect, created by local producer and educator, Carol Tizzano. Using the voices of diverse girls and women the film explores how females are depicted in the media. It will be shown at the Friday session followed by a panel and discussion around issues such as self-esteem and identity, sex and attraction, the interplay of race and ethnicity, body image, dieting, eating disorders, cosmetics and early influences such as Barbie dolls and cartoon characters.
Attendees at the Saturday workshop will participate in interactive learning and small group sessions led by local artist-educators in writing, music, visual arts and performance. The day culminates in a celebration of creative expressions around the theme.
Girls, age 10 and over, young women and adults are invited to attend. The cost is $5 for the Friday screening and panel discussion, $15 for the Saturday program (which includes lunch), or $20 for both sessions. There are discounts for groups and a limited number of scholarships are available upon written request.
Tizzano is an award-winning producer and an art and media educator who works with schools and organizations to incorporate media studies into their programs. She is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships for her work, including the Emmy and Chris Awards for excellence in documentary and educational media. She has worked independently and as a producer for local PBS affiliate, WVIZ.
