THE CLARA FRITZSCHE LIBRARY PRESENTS:

Drawing the Line figurative paintings
by Diane Fleisch-Hughes

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—29 October, 2004 — Notre Dame College’s Clara Fritzsche Library will host “Drawing the Line,” an exhibit of figurative paintings by Diane Fleisch-Hughes. The artist, an art student at Notre Dame College, creates contemporary drawings on canvas using charcoal and oils to render the figure in a very unique and personalized style. Born in New Jersey, Fleisch-Hughes has been drawing as long as she can remember. She attended art school in New York City and graduated with a BFA in illustration. She then worked as a fashion illustrator in the garment district in New York. After growing frustrated with the restrictions placed on her creativity, Fleisch-Hughes went to Europe to travel and explore the art world. Inspired by the art, the people and the atmosphere, Diane began painting again using figures as her main subject.

Fleisch-Hughes is primarily a figurative painter and uses the figure to fill the canvas. Her painting style is very loose. She draws the subject from life directly onto the canvas and concentrates on the unique qualities of her subject. She amplifies the gesture and the lines that make up the beauty of the figure. Each subject has a feature or a quality that is his or her very own and this is what Fleische-Hughes strives to bring out with exaggerated lines and strong paint strokes.

Fleisch-Hughes has shown her work in galleries throughout New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Ohio. She has been involved in numerous group shows and has had highly successful solo shows in the past. Fleisch-Hughes has had her work in charity shows and auctions benefiting such causes as the Art Center of northern New Jersey and the Rape Crisis Center in Cleveland. She is presently enrolled as a part-time student at Notre Dame College, where she is working towards obtaining her license to teach art. She currently resides in Concord, Ohio with her husband, four children and her dog.

The exhibit will run from November 4th through December 17th, with an opening reception scheduled for Thursday, November 4th from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibit may be viewed during library hours: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m. For more information, contact Karen Zoller at (216) 373-5267.
