Coreopsis: Renderings of Children in the Holocaust
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—19 September 2006 –Notre Dame College’s art department will host an exhibit of 100 portraits by Cleveland native Barbara Krahe Powers in conjunction with the production, An Then They Came for Me, a Holocaust related multi-media play about the lives of Eva Geiringer Schloss and her family during WW II.
Barbara co-authored the book The Promise: A Moving Story of a Family in the Holocaust with her friend, Eva Schloss. Powers drew her first portrait of Eva’s brother Heinz who perished in the Mauthausen concentration camp. She has since created over 250 pastel portraits of children of the Holocaust based on archived photographs. Powers created the drawings to remember the nearly 1.5 children who perished from disease, hunger and murder. Powers states, “May these portraits honor the spirit of each precious child, acknowledge their birth, highlight their beautiful features, bring to mind and heart the parents an families who loved them and give us occasion to remember.”
The exhibit Coreopsis-Renderings of Children of the Holocaust will be on view during the three performances of the play on October 20th, 21st and 22nd and will remain on view Monday through Friday from noon until 6:00 p.m. through December 7th.
Visitors may purchase drawings from the exhibit; proceeds will support peace and justice projects, including the work of the Tolerance Resource Center at Notre Dame College.
