Multi-talented NYU Professor Celebrates Diversity, Music at Notre Dame College

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—10 September 2009— New York University professor Dr. Mick Moloney will lead a celebration of Irish and Jewish collaborative music at Notre Dame College on Oct. 3, 2009. Dr. Moloney, a respected professor, folklorist and musician, will celebrate Tin Pan Alley collaborations with his multi-media presentation accompanied by music and commentary.

Tin Pan Alley collaborations started around the turn of the 20th Century in New York City. The city’s artists and vaudevillians would gather in the streets to practice their instruments and rehearse performances. The cacophony of sounds was compared to banging on tin pans, thus establishing the name Tin Pan Alley.

According to Dr. Moloney, Tin Pan Alley collaborations played a pivotal role in shaping the culture of the time, and ultimately left a lasting imprint on the history of American popular music. Dr. Moloney says the Irish/Jewish Tin Pan collaborations he presents are “essentially a charming story of decades of good natured ethnic flux, competition and cooperation.” With songs including “If it Wasn’t for the Irish and the Jews” and “Twas Only an Irishman’s Dream,” Moloney’s presentation will discuss the diversity upon which the American music industry was founded.

Dr. Moloney’s Tin Pan Alley presentation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the ground floor of the Administration Building at 4545 College Road, South Euclid. The event is presented by the Division of Arts & Humanities and the English, Communication & Theatre Department of Notre Dame College.
