Tolerance Talks Group Debuts
at Notre Dame College
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—3 October 2008—The Tolerance Talks readers’ group at Notre Dame College (NDC), dedicated to the study of human rights, tolerance, and roadblocks to mutual understanding, makes its debut this fall. The group will examine current and historical conditions that support or erode freedoms of groups and individuals. The readers’ group, which meets three times this fall, is sponsored by the College’s Tolerance Resource Center (TRC) and will be led by Maria Shine-Stewart, adjunct faculty in English.
The group welcomes the general community to participate in the three sessions as it explores issues from historical, psychological, spiritual, sociological, cultural, and other perspectives. There are no charges associated with the group, but seating is limited. Reserve your space by calling 216.373.5267.
The theme for this fall coincides with the Tolerance Resource Center’s Focus on Native Americans series. Planned readings about Native Americans’ world, filled with struggle, tragedy, strength and endurance, will be the springboard to discussion and reflection.
All talks will be held 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the Seminar Room of the College’s Clara Fritzsche Library. The readings under discussion are available by calling the NDC library, 216.373.5267, or through the county and local libraries.
The first session meets Wednesday, October 15 and covers History and Trauma. The suggested reading is “Historical Trauma,” by Tina Deschenie, published in the Tribal College Journal, 17.3 (Spring 2006):8-11.
The Wednesday, November 12th session explores Outreach and Action. The suggested reading is “The Emerging Role of Native Americans in the Electoral Process,” by Russ Lehman, sponsored by the Evergreen State College Native American Applied Research Institute, January 2003.
The final session on Wednesday, December 3rd focuses on Spirituality and Healing. The suggested reading is “Native American Healing Traditions” from the International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, 53.4 (December 2006): 453-469.
