Sam Miller to Receive Notre Dame College Medal

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—3 June 2008—Notre Dame College announced that civic leader Sam Miller will be awarded the Notre Dame College Medal Saturday evening, June 21 at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven. The tribute pays homage to a local leader who exemplifies the College’s ideals of personal, professional and global responsibility through his or her community service.

Dr. Andrew Roth, president of the College, stated, “Notre Dame College is proud to recognize Sam Miller’s lifelong philanthropic and community involvement on behalf of Greater Cleveland’s less fortunate and the twin causes of social justice and inter-faith and inter-group understanding and respect. He has worked with myriad diverse organizations, including the College’s own Tolerance Resource Center, to help make the Greater Cleveland community a better place to live and work.”

Miller, co-chairman of the board and treasurer of Forest City Enterprises, Inc., is a Cleveland native and a supporter of countless diverse causes and organizations that benefit the citizens of Greater Cleveland. He has served on the boards of public television station WVIZ, the Urban League of Cleveland, Jewish National Fund, Crime Stoppers, Police Memorial, Medical Mutual of Ohio, the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland Foundation, Notre Dame College and other local colleges and universities. He is a Lifetime Honorary Trustee of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland and the Diversity Center (formerly known as the National Council of Christians and Jews). He is a member of the Greater Cleveland Roundtable and serves on the board of directors and executive committee of the Cleveland Clinic. He also serves as national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal.

The Notre Dame College Medal joins a long list of honors and awards Miller has received over the years, including the Distinguished Service Award of Medical Hall of Fame, Ellis Island Medal of Honor, American Red Cross National Humanitarian Award and NCCJ Award. Most recently he has been recognized by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.

Miller is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University and earned his MBA at Harvard Business School. A member of this nation’s Greatest Generation, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946.

Alex Machaskee chairs the event, with honorary co-chairs Robert Duvin and Umberto Fedeli.

Proceeds from the dinner will help support the College’s Tolerance Resource Center. The Center provides resources for students, faculty, scholars and the general community to better understand and appreciate issues of racial, cultural, and religious diversity in the world around them. The Center offers instructional materials and conducts programs for teachers of the Holocaust.
