Notre Dame College Dedicates Altar in Refurbished Chapel
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio—23 September 2008—Notre Dame College will celebrate the renewal of its Christ the King Chapel at an historic Mass and dedication of its new altar on Sunday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. This marks the official opening of the chapel after undergoing a five-month restoration and improvement.
The Most Reverend Richard Gerard Lennon, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, will preside; Reverend Edward E. Mehok, Notre Dame College’s chaplain and professor emeritus, will concelebrate.
Notre Dame College’s Chapel Renewal campaign raised in excess of $500,000 from corporate and individual donors, exceeding its initial goal. Donors will be honored at a luncheon following the Mass.
The multi-faceted renewal of the chapel also included the re-leading of the stained glass windows, refinishing of the pews and woodwork, rewiring of the lighting system, installation of additional lighting and a new audio system, new carpeting, and air conditioning. The Holtkamp organ was completely refurbished by the Holtkamp Company.
The chapel, built in 1928, is located in the north wing of the College’s Administration Building, a neo Tudor Gothic structure which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The chapel was designed by John W. Winterich of Cleveland, whose work can be seen in other Cleveland churches of that period including St. John’s Cathedral. John W. Winterich & Associates, headed by the grandson of the architect, managed the renewal project.
