Students Network at Career Fest

For the second year in a row, Notre Dame College students visited one of the largest career fairs in Ohio to seek internships and permanent employment.

The 15 juniors and seniors went to Columbus on Feb. 4 for the annual Career Fest, which attracted 600 students from 34 member institutions of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges that sponsored the free event.

Notre Dame juniors and seniors travelled to Columbus for the annual Career Fest.Since attendance was down from 800 last year, the students were able to have productive conversations with employers without waiting in long lines. Several students even completed their on-site interviews with some of the 91 potential employers from the business, technical, nonprofit and government sectors.

“Our students were very enthusiastic about the experience and were getting solid interest for jobs,” said Kim Lane, director of career services. “I was proud of how professional our students dressed and interacted with employers.”

Students majoring in information technology or accounting were in particular demand. At least 31 employers were hiring in those areas, according to the event’s student guidebook listing. Many Northeast Ohio employers, including Progressive Insurance, Hyland Software and J.M. Smucker, lamented the lack of qualified students majoring in management information systems or computer science, according to employer evaluations.

Still, participating recruiters rated Career Fest as one of the best events they attend all year, and many employers and students engaged in follow-up interviews.

Notre Dame’s Career Services Center prepared students for networking at the career fair through a series of workshops and by polishing their résumés. The center encourages graduating seniors who did not attend Career Fest to pick up the student guidebook and speak to Lane about their post-graduate job search.
